ATI XPERT 128 prob
Hello, I've seen a couple of references to this card lately, so I thought I'd seek some help. I cannot get it to work...and I have tried what is suggested in the SuSEdb. Will it work? Has anyone achieved success with this card? Trying to get my kids hooked on Linux (SuSE) through the use of BzFlag (they love it) ;-) Thanks, Tom -- TRBishop tb64710@alltel.net SuSE 7.2 Pro

Isn't the Xpert 128 actually a RageXL (Mach64) variant instead of a Rage128? If memory serves (which it almost never does), this is the case. If it's not a true Rage128, DRI will not run. Just a random question...is this an integrated device or removable? If it's removable, have you considered picking up a Voodoo3 to replace it? They're dirt cheap these days and are a breeze to configure. ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi Jon, BTW, a belated welcome back! Well, according to what I could find, it *should* use the r128 driver. It is removable. I don't know what I was thinking. I have two other ATI's that are great, but I forgot that this one is on the edge. Unfortunately, I've blown my graphics card budget for this month. ;-) Maybe next month I'll do that VooDoo that you do! Thanks, Tom -- TRBishop tb64710@alltel.net SuSE 7.2 Pro

Hi Jon, BTW, a belated welcome back!
Thank you, and to the others that replied. :)

Let's find out. What does `lspci -vv' say? This is "very verbose" mode, and can get quite wordy; it may not wrap well in email. If you *could* it would *rock* if you did `lspci -vv > pci-listing.txt' and posted that on a web server somewhere, providing us mere mortal list members to read it as lspci intended it to be read. :)

I know exactly how that goes. :) AFAIK, the V3 is *still* hands-down the easiest somewhat modern 3D card to configure with XFree86 4. I have a Banshee/AGP, a V3-2k/AGP and a V3-3k/AGP that all work marvelously in all operational modes, with little- to no-fuss configuring. If you want to keep it easy, avoid the new Radeons and avoid the ATI RageMaxx (dual-processor Rage128) cards; there are lots of problems with lots of configurations with these devices. ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Sorry, I've already yanked it out. However, I'm at the moment loading Mandrake 8.0 on my test machine with the offensive card in it. So let's see in a while what happens.

Ati has a long history of changing [upgrading if you want] the chips on thier boards. No big deal under windows since they ship drivers for the cards. My orginal Rage Fury works just fine and likely won't be replaced until I get a much bigger monitor. Nick
I am in the same boat. If do not manage get it working via sax 2 -m 0=ati just do like me and give up until X version does support it. These card use to work under SuSe 6.3 but not anymore. Alex Thomas Bishop wrote:

Well, I kinda have...I stuck it in an old Win98 box, but it won't work there either (I think that machine doesn't have enough RAM, but I don't care) BTW, I tried -m 0=ati and -m 0=r128...nada. Thanks, Tom -- TRBishop tb64710@alltel.net SuSE 7.2 Pro
From what i have read these card only work in P166 MMX and up. Just check support.ati.com if think i blowing smoke.

I've screwed up the quoting so I con't know who is asking. Other then I don't think it's Alex. I don't think ati would be the right option. Under X4.xx ati is the older ATI cards. I think r128 Might be the right option. If you want I'll post my config file but you'll need to check and make sure it's right for you. I'm running a Rage fury 32Meg Nick

Hello, I was the original poster. What I have, is a just purchased , Xpert 128 PCI 16MB card. I have tried the r128 driver, which sax2 wants to use with the XF_SVGA server....which I gather, is as it's supposed to be.....from reading info at XFree.org. However, I have seen no specific reference to PCI versions, only AGP. I don't know if this is significant or not. I also use a 3D Rage Pro and an Xpert 98 in other machines (w/Linux) and they work OK with the Mach64 server. The Xpert 98 however, can't use any 3D...pity. Anyway, the Xpert 128 does not function for me...and I gather for others either....even though it is supposedly supported by v4.03. I *would* appreciate your config file, to see what's what. Thanks a lot! Tom -- TRBishop tb64710@alltel.net SuSE 7.2 Pro

Did you try letting xf86config do the setup instead of Sax2? When I first went to Xfree 4.0 Sax hadn't been updated to handle 4.x yet. xf86config isn't pretty but it got things working fine. Maybe let it try the intial setup and if that works then let Sax2 fine tune it. I think with 4.x you call it with the -configure command.

Here's mine. Edit it to suit. The card stuff is near the end. It does seem
to add the AGP to the end of the card name.
