I have on several occasions had problems where I try and mount a known good floppy on my Suse 6.2 system and it just go crazy hammering the disk. After it gives up trying to read the disk, the noise stops and it turns out that /var/log/messages have all sorts of messages about bad sectors. Funny, none of my other systems don't have problems with floppies. How do I turn off that obnoxious messaging in the floppy driver. It's bad enough I have to wait for the floppy to not get read, but to be hammering the disk is really awful. The order of probable causes is (1) faulty cable (2) faulty drive (3) faulty controller (4) anything else. Start by swapping cables, then frives between machines. Good luck.
