Well, kdepim isn't just a program you can "checkout" it's a series of things such as Korganizer, Kpilot..etc..etc.
They all work together so that's why in most cases they are bundled together.
If your looking for a good Pilot/Calendar program. Check out Jpilot. I've been using it with my Visor for about a year and a half. It works quite well. :)
