(Slightly OT) TheRegister site loads slow on SUSE
Hi, A few months ago there was a thread here about SUSE 8.2 & 9.0 having a big delay when opening the URL http://theregister.co.uk . This occured in Konqi and Opera. The suggestion was to change something in the networking settings in SUSE. We did that and things seemed better but recently both theregister.co.uk and theregister.com are even slower that before; they seem to be stuck at a 'doubleclik' site and they take in excess of 4 minutes to load. I have just started to avoid the site; afterall if they value their advertisers more than their readers I can take the hint. But recently I revitalized an XP machine I have ignored for 6 months and to my surprise it can load and display theregister's site in a blink, either in IE6 or Netscrape or Opera. Can we revisit those changes we made to the SUSE network settings and see if our favorite Linux can again visit TheRegister? Can anyone help out? PeterB

I remember that well. I haven't had any of those problems since adding "0.0.0.0 ad.uk.doubleclick.net" to /etc/hosts. Maybe you're getting a different doubleclick server/address and need to add that to /etc/hosts. Stan

I'm using konq in 8.2 and the site takes a little under 30 secs to load, but I've only got a 128k connection and d/l stuff at the same time. Not too bad really. 4 mins you say? That would annoy me for sure. I've not done anything interesting to network settings. Jake
Have you a url for the hosts collection.
I seem to have lost my copy.
