Thanks for all the info, very useful answer. So I'll backup the home dir, and give 10.1 a try. Mandriva always has the same old problem on new releases. They always fail to check on backward compatability, upgrading from one release to the next is very prone to fail. It's alway better to do a fresh install., which gives problems with some apps.
SUSE is prone to the same issues (as are all OSs in my experience). Generally speaking, you can get away with minor upgrades.. 10.0 to 10.1 for example, but it's hit and miss. Successful for some and a disaster for others. I usually format / with each new release, and format /home with each major release (eg from 9.x to 10.x) That has worked fairly well..... as long as I haven't gone too crazy with bleeding edge apps :-) BTW, this list has a quirk in that if you simply reply, you do not reply to the list.. instead you send an offlist private email... in case you wonder why.. well it's been hashed and flogged to death here.. and the end of it is... that's the way this list is managed (reasons given include the infinte loop situation where people have vacation responders enabled). So the solution is to either do a reply all and remove the private email address, or use a mail client that is mailing list friendly (eg KMail). Oh, and welcome back to SUSE :-) Hope we can help out and all that.
