Once again I ask for help. Customer Service? what's that???
See below for original post. I'm going to try an NFS install from my HP pc once I get it setup properly, but this is not a long range solution, especially if my target box is at a remote site w/ no connection from the outside.

So yast didn't get up early this morning and make your breakfast - bad luck. I had to reinstall Windows last night, 23 reboots and four hours later I'm still nowhere near a working system, cf. the suse 8.0 install which was like a beautiful dream experienced on a sunny beach by comparison.
I don't want it to make my breakfast. I just want it to work as
advertised.
For me it's been just the opposite. I have two brand new machines w/ no
OS on either. I've reinstalled Suse at least 10 times on each trying to
get a complete install. I took one of the machines and a w2k install
went in perfectly the first time.
I posted the problem (see below) with no response. I've sent in a
ticket to SUSE - same result - no responses.
If I weren't already working on 2 other projects (other than the one I'm
trying to install Linux for) I'd get in and hack Yast2 to make it work.
But I don't have time for this.
I guess you get what you pay for.

modules/MediaUI.ycp:209 mountlog mount: block device /dev/hdc is write protected, mount read-only mount you must specify the filesystem type I've tried to install from scratch several times with the same results. Any suggestion? tia, Bob Dixon Bob Dixon mailto:bdixon@logictrends.com bdixon@logictrends.com mailto:hcdixon@bellsouth.net hcdixon@bellsouth.net 404.310.7167

Tried installing Suse 7.3 on P4 machine and the installation process
I'm not sure there's still inst. support available for 7.3, it used to be that after 90 days after the new release the old release is de-supported. We give all retailers a chance to upgrade and take back any unsold copies, so if any stores still have the old release on the shelves there's not much we can do. Yes, if that's still the policy they could at least have told you... Do you have the support ticket number?
could not find CD2 after I put it in the tray and clicked on the 'OK' button. I'm using Yast2 and booting from a cdrom.
I clicked on the 'Show Details' checkbox and it displayed the following:
Could not mount the source medium.
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mount read-only mount:
Please have a look at /dev/hdc with "ls -l /dev/hdc". It should start with "brw---...." (for block device, user: read/write) and the user listed should be you. As you already noticed, for the installation itself it is of no consequence if you only have/use/can use CD #1 since this CD has the entire base ("Default") system on it. Have you already tried to use "YOU" (online update) to update your 7.3 system? Michael
Thanks Michael - finally someone responds. For some month ago I tried to install 7.3 on a P4 computer and it didn't work. The trouble I had was with the drivers for the graphic card. When I got 8.0 i tried to install again and it worked like a dream. Maybe there is something with the new computers that isn't compatible with an old distribution? Regards Nils-Olov
