[SuSE Linux] glibc-2.1.1
Hello, I am preparing to run an application that requires the new threading in glibc 2.1 so am about to upgrade to lx_glibc-2.1.131-7.i386.rpm from SuSE's ftp site. Are there any potential problems I should look for? I'm worried about possible incompatability problems with existing SuSE packages (now running OK with globc-2.0.7) and a the newer library. Thanks! ____________________________________________________________________ Robert Paulsen <A HREF="http://paulsen.home.texas.net</A">http://paulsen.home.texas.net</A> -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

This is not glibc 2.1.1 (we don't have 2.1.131, and I doubt we will ever release such a glibc version).

From the Description (rpm -qip lx_glibc): These are the kernel includes that we use to compile glibc. Basically this is a cut down include-tree of the kernel mentioned in the version of this package.
ahh, thats why I didn't recognize it. Its the kernel includes not an actual glibc upgrade.

You will get problems with static linked programs like rpm and login if you really don't know what you are doing.
You need the nss-v1 glibc-add-on from my WWW page (<A HREF="http://www.suse.de/~kukuk/linux/glibc.html</A">http://www.suse.de/~kukuk/linux/glibc.html</A>). And after installing, you need to recompile egcs and ncurses, and you should recompile shadow (login).
Take head to what Thorsten says, If you don't know what your doing, you could drastically mess up your system when making such a system dependent upgrade. -- S.Toms - tomas@primenet.com - <A HREF="http://www.primenet.com/~tomas</A">http://www.primenet.com/~tomas</A> S.u.S.E. Not sure where exactly you saw that particular version

If in fact the above upgrade you mention does exist. You should have very minimal problems upgrading on an existing glibc system. There are bound to be a few minor incompatabilities. But as I havn't downloaded the source for newer glibc's I don't have the README files to tell you whats what. -- S.Toms - tomas@primenet.com - <A HREF="http://www.primenet.com/~tomas</A">http://www.primenet.com/~tomas</A> S.u.S.E. Dingell, also of Michigan. DINGELL: There are places in the world at the present time where we are having to artificially propagate oysters and clams. HOFFMAN: You mean the oysters I buy are not nature's oysters? DINGELL: They may or may not be natural. The simple fact of the matter is that female oysters through their living habits cast out large amounts of seed and the male oysters cast out large amounts of fertilization ... HOFFMAN: Wait a minute! I do not want to go into that.
