[SuSE Linux] ISP connects but can't ping, ftp, browse, etc.
Hello Suse-linux-e, Got S.u.S.E. 5.3 installed successfully, compiled the kernel with no no problems and am even connecting to MSN. My problem is once connected it seems that it won't resolve host names. I've tried using the IP address from ifconfig as a DNS, but to no avail. Somebody please help. Quintin, Check your /etc/resolv.conf file, should look something like this, but put your own info in. tevep@bash /etc]$ cat resolv.conf search linux-shell.net nameserver 208.194.157.5 nameserver 208.194.157.9 Also check /etc/host.conf as follows: [stevep@bash /etc]$ cat host.conf order hosts, bind multi on You should be able to resolve names once you fix your files. Steve, I have been a little slow responding to email lately. I am trying to get over being sick. I am still very interested in making Linux connect from the command line. I haven't had time lately to play with it much, but I do every once in a while. I am still having the problem of the modem doing everything it is supposed to, but then when I use ifconfig to see what has happend it looks like I am not connected. This is after listening to the modem dial and talk to my ISP, so everything sounds normal, just that it is not connecting. In your example below is the nameserver the same thing as primary and secondary DNS? That is taking my knowledge of windows and using it here. One of the stupid problems I am having is that I have changed some of my ppp files and now yast won't touch them. Should I just forget about using yast and do everything by hand? One thing I have also thought about doing is formating the hard drive and starting from scratch. Maybe I have messed with the system enough so that is would be easier that way.
