[SLE] Use of unscaled fonts in font paths

`Steve's Linux' (not sure who the human is) posted this example of a FontPath setting for XF86Config a while ago:
Section "Files" RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb" FontPath "unix/:7101" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/URW" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
However, the example in the XWindow Howto looks a little different:
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
Some of the difference may just be a matter of taste, but there's one substantive difference: the `/' before `:unscaled' that appears in the Howto but not in Steve's version.
Does anyone know if the slash really belongs there or not? And if not, how X distinguishes between scaled and unscaled fonts when it's looking for a font with a particular name or description?
Neither the Howto nor the XF86Config(5) man page is enlightening on this point. Is there a better place to look for information?

Hi Paul, Hi everyone. We decided to call ourselves 'Steve's Linux' as we run a photo studio here in Spain and we've just switched to Linux and we all have a say but me (Steve Sheriff) is the only person who can run root. Don't know whether this is the place but we got one of our models to do some shots with the SuSE T shirt. They used to sell motorbikes like that! To explain our font path list: This was to get the best compromise between StarOffice and KDE apps looking good at the same time. With the X suggested list, StarOffice looks awful and almost unreadable with small fonts. With our listing you can go right down to 6 on our 17" screen and still be able to read the text at zoom 1:1. The list was cut and pasted directly from XF86Config.
