Hi, Just installed SuSE 7.2 and am having a problem (actually, a couple of problems, but this note focuses on one of them). My tty consoles don't work. Here is the symptom: When I use ctrl-alt-F1 (or F2, etc.) to switch to a tty, my monitor puts up an error message: INVALID SCAN FREQUENCY Yes, this is displayed by the monitor itself. One thing I tried to fix it was to edit /etc/lilo.conf and change "vga = 771" to "vga = normal" (then run lilo). This had an effect but didn't fix the problem. The effect is that with this, the screen is completely blank, except for a blinking cursor at the upper-left corner. Basic question: Is it the responsibility of X to switch out of the video mode or is it the responsibility of the tty to switch into text/vga mode? I still have a few things to try, but can't do so until tomorrow so I thought I'd post this message to see if anyone had any ideas. Oh yes, I have a Matrox G450 video card and a Hitachi CM771 monitor. This all works fine on SuSE 7.0, which I have upgraded to XFree86 version 4.0.3 (same as what's in SuSE 7.2). Thanks. -- ____________________________________________________________________ Robert Paulsen paulsen@texas.net
XFree86 will not properly restore the video mode when switching to text console, it was a known bug. I have the same card, and found that if I use the console frame buffer at the same resolution then the X server, I don't get these blank screens. I use 1280x1024, which can be set if you use vga=794 in /etc/lilo.conf. (Note: remove the append="vga=..." in that file and use plain vga=...). Now, I'm not sure if setting the same resolution is waht works, or using MATROX's drivers or upgrading XFree86, I did all of the above. I'd suggest you to update to XFree86 4.1.0, too. AND READ THE README FILE IN THE FTP SITE. -- Rafael
1) Is there any special issue to have a dual boot with SuSE 7.1 and Windows 2K on the same Hard Disk and have a dual boot ? 2) Is there any special issue to have a dual boot with SuSE 7.1 (IDE -2) and Windows 2K (IDE -1) on Separate Hard Disk's and have a dual boot ?

I don't know for any special issues - looking at 615 pages SuSE book it reccomends You to use the windows boot loader and omit LILO from installing to MBR. However, I haven't followed this note and let LILO install itself on MBR - it also added the "Windows" option, so I had no problems [2nd time I did that MBR got screewed and wouldn't load LILO anymore, only Windows (without any boot loader). I simply used the Linux boot disk and chosed hda9 as boot partition and configured the LILO from Linux then.] Yours, Ziga
OK, I found out that the below problem was caused by a modeline I added to XF89config in order to get 1600x1200 resolution. I copied it from the SuSE 7.0 installation. Well, I didn't plan on giving up my 1600x1200 resolution so I did a little more fiddling with lilo.conf. By removing *both* the vga= line and the menu-scheme lines it now works. I didn't like that fancy treatment on tty1 anyway! On Fri, Jun 22, 2001 at 08:56:34AM -0500, Robert C. Paulsen Jr. wrote:
