Hey Group: I have a HD with a bootable (MBR) filesystem and files. It is knoppix. Boots just fine off the HD. Now I would like to backwards the HD as a "On the fly" compressed file. I have looked at cpio, dd, mkisofs, tar, and others. I have the files on one HD and the to be built on another HD. Anyone completed this process? I can see the file making process but miss the "On the fly" part. -- 73 de Donn Washburn __ " http://www.hal-pc.org/~n5xwb " Ham Callsign N5XWB / / __ __ __ __ __ __ __ 307 Savoy St. / /__ / / / \/ / / /_/ / \ \/ / Sugar Land, TX 77478 /_____/ /_/ /_/\__/ /_____/ /_/\_\ LL# 1.281.242.3256 a MSDOS Virus "Free Zone" OS Email: n5xwb@hal-pc.org Info: http://www.knoppix.com

Parse error: incomprehensible syntax. "backwards" is an adverb (or possibly an adjective...). not a verb. Did you mean "back up"?

I'm not entirely sure of what you're trying to achieve. You could back up a partition and compress it with "dd if=/dev/hda1 | gzip > backup.gz". If you meant something else, please elaborate.
