It seems that version 7.1 is the first SuSE release that I am not able to install on my PC as I have the previous releases. Using the Zip Drive Mini-Howto, as I did with SuSE 6.2, 6.3, 6.4 and 7.0, I was able to easily install Zip100 on my lp1 port and mount it as sda4. Not with 7.1. I make mrproper to start fresh, then in make menuconfig I set the kernel as: scsi support = Y scsi disk support = Y Iomega zip support as a module (ppa not imm - old zip drive) printer support as a module then make dep, clean bzImage, modules, modules_install. Then depmod -a (doing this or not doesn't make a difference) Then I copy bzImage to /boot/vmlinuz-jlk and System.map to /boot/System.map. Then I ran Lilo with a section pointing to my new kernel. (Love the new Lilo, BTW!). A reboot brings up the new kernel, I can see the ncr53c810 scsi card load. It has an IRQ of 11. But, uncharacteristically, modprobe ppa fails: root@JLKreps:/home/jerry > modprobe ppa /lib/modules/2.2.18/scsi/ppa.o: init_module: Device or resource busy Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters /lib/modules/2.2.18/scsi/ppa.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.18/scsi/ppa.o failed /lib/modules/2.2.18/scsi/ppa.o: insmod ppa failed Checking interrupts I see that my lp0 parallel card has an IRS 11. Modprobe lp also fails: root@JLKreps:/home/jerry > modprobe lp /lib/modules/2.2.18/misc/lp.o: init_module: Device or resource busy Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters /lib/modules/2.2.18/misc/lp.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.18/misc/lp.o failed /lib/modules/2.2.18/misc/lp.o: insmod lp failed Strangly, modprobe parport loads, but doesn't allow anything. Also, It seems the kernel does not recognize /dev/sda4 as a block device, but probably because ppa won't insmod, because the 'resource is busy'. I haven't had the lid off my box in over two years. I'm not going to take it off for 7.1. JLK
Do you have parport_pc module loaded? As far as I remember my tweaking with Zip drives 2 years ago, that was the part of the puzzle I was missing. Correct me if I am wrong: 3 modules are needed for the Zip: parport_pc, lp, and ppa If you have your 7.0/older system alive, could you check what modules are loaded when you use the Zip drive? Ya, that was the only module that would load. ppa and lp die with IRQ conflict messages between the scsci and lp0, but I haven't changed those settings in over two years, when I first installed the zip on SuSE using the Zip drive mini-howto reference. SuSE has changed some switches somewhere... in moving from 7.0 to 7.1. I've been looking in modules.conf and other config files, but no joy so far. JLK

Parport_pc is needed if your zip and printer are sharing the same card and/or you are using the 2.0.x kernel. I have been using the SuSE supplied ppa since the 2.2.x kernel. Remember, I was only upgrading from 7.0 to 7.1 and I haven't cracked open the box to change any switches, IRQ's or anything else. I see no practical reason why the same procedure which worked in 7.0 should not work in 7.1. JLK
