[S.u.S.E. Linux] e-mail question
Greetings! I am a Linux newbie and I am planning to change my current operating system to SuSE 5.2. I have an e-mail account with AOL and one with CompuServe. For those of you that use Linux, do any of you use AOL or CompuServe as a provider? I asked both companies if they had interface software for Linux and neither has. Do you use a Windows emulator (Wabi?)? Is there an Internet provider out there that is Linux friendly? If so, do they have nodes throughout the US? I'll need to log in via a 202 area code. Thanks in advance for your help! Ert - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Hi, Check out your yellow pages for Internet.... Some of them will even provide you with a script to dial-in. Cheers, alexm On Wed, 29 Jul 1998, Robert Farquhar wrote:

I'm not sure about AOL, the last I used it they required proprietary software. This may have changed. CompuServe will probably allow you to connect, but I'm not sure how. I use EarthLink Sprint. They are so-so. Sometimes I get rudely shut off from the network , and sometimes the performance stinks. I really can't give a bench marked measurement of quality. The number I dial into is: (202) 478-0571. I'm in Prince George's County. (800) 395-8425 ex 5234 will get you to a customer support rep with whom I spoke at 22:50. I use kppp to connect. I can probably help you get set up. I'm not sure how much help their tech support will be for Linux. Hi Robert, I have had several ISP's and have used IBM.net for about a year and a half. They seem to be very Linux friendly. They have instructions for slip and ppp on their web site. They use PAP. They're 24 hour help line has never failed me. I really do like them. They charge 19.95 for 100 hours a month and they have dial up numbers all over the U.S. and the rest of the world for that matter. Good Luck, Steve Robert Farquhar wrote:

I've had the best luck with the Xisp program as a dialer and using a very small local ISP ( who uses nothing but Linux!) -- yours, Andy - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

I use wvdial, which works well with SuSE 5.2 and my non-linux-friendly ISP. Hi all, I've converted recently from RH to SuSE 5.2, and I've run across a problem with the terminal emulator I like to use. Under RH, I used the mxterm program, which is an xterm with a motif-like scroll bar. When I use the same program under SuSE, the terminal is corrupted when viewing files with more (or less). The first page of the file is displayed correctly, but upon scrolling down, the terminal is switched into reverse-video mode. When I quit more, the terminal is reset to normal. Also the man pages are badly corrupted and difficult to read, and I suspect it's the same problem. Any suggestions how to fix it? Thanks, -bob mallozzi -- Robert S. I am unfamiliar with mxterm, but rxvt has a motif-style scrollbar, and it supports pixmap backgrounds, as well as being light on resources. It is included with SuSE 5.2 Robert.Mallozzi@msfc.nasa.gov wrote:

Hi, everyone, I have the same story with terminals when I telnet to my system (man pages screwed up and more inverts the screen colors, pine does the same thing). The only way it works if you export TERM=vt100. No other emulation helps. Everything seems fine when you run these commands at the console. Moreover, when I open a rsh on S.u.S.E. machine from an AIX machine it echoes every command twice (as well as passwords). It would be nice to know what's going on. Any pointers are appreciated, alexm - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Best advice I've found in a very long while! WVDial installed in a snap and is what I needed to simplify dialing by users other than root.
