file/directory highlighting with KDE
Hi, I've got suse running on a development box and like the directory/file highlighting with KDE. I'd like to enable this on a sun box. What files would I need to copy over? Also on the linux box when I do a `ls`, I see the files highlighted, but when I run an alias command, eg alias fil='clear;echo "LIST OF FILES";ls -l | grep "^-"' I no longer see the highlighting. Why? Thanks Alex

You can't just copy it over, you're talking about different hardware architectures and different OSs (assuming your Sun box is running Solaris, not Linux, but the architecture thing still applies) You could install KDE on the Sun box of course, you can get the sources from ftp.kde.org -- James Ogley, Unix Systems Administrator, Pinnacle Insurance Plc james.ogley@pinnacle.co.uk www.pinnacle.co.uk +44 (0) 20 8731 3619 Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.0) Updated GNOME RPMs for SuSE Linux: www.usr-local-bin.org ********************************************************************** CONFIDENTIALITY.This e-mail and any attachments are confidential and may also be privileged. Presumably because it's filtered through grep and grep removes the ANSI colour codes. //Anders

Sorry, it should have read "and the pipe removes" not "grep removes". Do an "echo $LS_OPTIONS" and you'll see you have "--colour=tty". In other words, you have colour codes only when the ouput is to a tty. You can change this to --color=always in your alias to keep the colours
