[SuSE Linux] Info for newbies & Re:to "slow"
I would be more than happy to help you in any way I can to help get you on your feet with Linux. I have about 10 distros of Linux, that for the past 2 years I would install into my computer and fiddle around with it for awhile before getting bored or confused and eventually succumb to the horrors of Micro$oft again. (I have so many distros because some of the box sets from Walnut Creek came with everything from Red Hat to Debian.) Finally after a lot of trial and error and maturing in my level of experience with computers in general, things started to become a bit more clear. (hehe as Mud!) Eventually things will become a bit clearer over time as you learn what happens if you dabble a bit here, and tweak a bit here. Anyhow, below I have included some of the book titles and refrences I have found to be of great value. I hope you can use this information and hope anyone who reads this post will be able to do the same. Anyone who can contribute to this list please do as the more we learn the better we become attuned to our systems! Books that I have found very usefull: (dictionary?? hehe..) 1. "Linux in a Nutshell" A desktop quick reference O'Reilly books ISBN: 1-56592-167-4 2. SuSE Linux (WOOP!) found in the distribution box set of your favorite SuSE distro. 3. "Linux the Complete Reference" Walnut Creek CDROM Books ISBN: 1-57176-199-3 The book I have is the 5th edition, it may be old but even old books hold a wisdom sometimes forgotten. over 2000 pages of "HowTo" info. 4. "Linux Unleased" SAMS Publishing ISBN: 0-672-30705-7 SAMS "Unleashed" series of books are invaluable and thick with information. Usually SAMS books come with a copy of Linux of some sort. So you will have a copy of Linux to present to your "Linux Buddy" ! 5. "Red Hat Linux Unleashed" SAMS Publishing ISBN: 0-672-31410-x Even though this book is primarily Red Hat, it still holds Linux information that I often use. I have this book from my "pre-SuSE" days. 6. "Linux Device Drivers" O'Reilly & Associates, INC. ISBN: 1-56592-292-1 Once again O'Reilly comes through with another good book. I would suggest any book from O'Reilly, I still need to stock my bookshelf with quite a few more titles. The above named book may be a bit advanced, but hey it was on sale! 7. "Novell's Internet Plumbing Handbook" Novell Press, Peter Rybaczyk ISBN: 0-7645-4537-X This book in my opinion has a lot of good easy to understand information about networking and internet communications. Plus once again.. it was on sale.. Yes, I have an affinity for books.. don't get me near a bookstore, library book sale, computer show or flea market. In Nashville there are quite a few computer shows, usually I can find quite a few titles that can be so cheap that I pick up extra copies to give to my friends! Library book sales are another good way to find computer books. Sometimes they may be old, but at $1.00 a book you can't beat it. Other books not necessarily "Linux" depending on how you look at it.. 1. "Unix in Plain English" MIS: Press, Kevin Reichard & Eric Foster-Johnson ISBN: 1-55828-549-0 2. "Unix for Dos and Windows Users" MIS: Press, Kevin Reichard ISBN: 1-55828-361-7 Magazines and periodicals: 1. "Linux Journal" The Monthly Magazine of the Linux Community You can visit <A HREF="http://www.linuxjournal.com</A">http://www.linuxjournal.com</A> and sign up for a free issue to start the magazine rolling into a mail box near you! I have to say, that every month I practically work myself into a frenzy waiting for this magazine. Is there a psychologist in the house? 2. "Sys Admin" The Journal For Unix Systems Administrators <A HREF="http://www.samag.com</A">http://www.samag.com</A> for subscription info. 3. "Linux Magazine" Haven't recieved my copy of this one yet, but I look forward to it. <A HREF="http://www.linux-mag.com</A">http://www.linux-mag.com</A> The following Web sites are some of my favorites. You can take self paced classes, or virtual classes with an instructor. You purchase a book for the class from zdu, or your local bookstore and, well check it out! You can also recieve continuing education points. They offer a "Unix" class, though the class is based upon Red Hat Linux (the last time I checked) The class takes you from installing and configurating, up to using vi, emacs and basic commands. ...More <A HREF="http://slashdot.org</A">http://slashdot.org</A> <A HREF="http://www.freshmeat.net</A">http://www.freshmeat.net</A> <A HREF="http://www.linuxberg.com</A">http://www.linuxberg.com</A> <A HREF="http://www.linuxnow.com/</A">http://www.linuxnow.com/</A> <A HREF="http://www.xnet.com/~blatura/linapps.shtml</A">http://www.xnet.com/~blatura/linapps.shtml</A> <A HREF="http://www.tunelinux.com</A">http://www.tunelinux.com</A> <A HREF="http://www.geek-girl.com/unix.html</A">http://www.geek-girl.com/unix.html</A> <A HREF="http://www.linuxresources.com/</A">http://www.linuxresources.com/</A> <A HREF="http://www.justlinux.com</A">http://www.justlinux.com</A> <A HREF="http://www.lwn.net</A">http://www.lwn.net</A> <A HREF="http://www.linuxtoday.com/</A">http://www.linuxtoday.com/</A> <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/index.html</A> <A HREF="http://www.linuxsupportline.com/~netmag/en/</A">http://www.linuxsupportline.com/~netmag/en/</A> <A HREF="http://www.linuxfocus.org/English/</A">http://www.linuxfocus.org/English/</A> <A HREF="http://www-personal.engin.umich.edu/~jgotts/linux/howto/</A">http://www-personal.engin.umich.edu/~jgotts/linux/howto/</A> <A HREF="http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/</A">http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/</A> <A HREF="http://www.scripps.edu/~jsmith/jazip/</A">http://www.scripps.edu/~jsmith/jazip/</A> <A HREF="http://www.xfree.org/</A">http://www.xfree.org/</A> <A HREF="http://linux.miningco.com/</A">http://linux.miningco.com/</A> <A HREF="http://filewatcher.org/</A">http://filewatcher.org/</A> Phew!!
