[opensuse] Dual boot OS 12.2 & Ubuntu 10.04
Hi, Has anyone experience how to setup a dual boot system wit OpenSuse 12.2 and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS ? My current laptop is running Ubuntu, because a while ago (a little more than a year) I could not install OS 11.4 on it. Now I want to go back to OpenSuse, or at least try (the live-cd works fine, like it did with 11.4). I tried in a virtual machine. Since I didn't have the install-cd of 10.04 at hand I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on one partition. Then I installed OpenSuse on another partition. Dual booting seemed to work fine, except, for the moment I want Ubuntu to be the default operating system. So I went into Yast, bootloader. I set the default to Ubuntu and rebooted. The Ubuntu-choice was gone, so I can't get into Ubuntu any more. Trying to modify the bootloader with Yast was of no use, I don't have the choice any more. And I don't know grub2 to modify it manually. I tried again, now taking snapshots _and_ using Ubuntu 10.04. I updated all operating systems, and again making Ubuntu the default in OpenSuse's Yast. Now it works. I don' know what made the difference. Now I'm a bit afraid to do this on my real machine. I have no experience "repairing" Ubuntu. Can anyone give suggestions how to proceed ? Side-question : can Opensuse and Ubuntu live together using the same partition for /home ? Hi Carl, I don't think that will work. Both OpenSuse 12.2 and Ubuntu 10.04 work with Grub2. There you don't have menu.lst any more. I could handle the old grub. Now it's different though. Anyway, thanks for your response. Koenraad Lelong. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

A friend of mine pointed out that in .Boot there is something like "grub.conf". Open it in Kate, or any text editor, and it looks a lot like the old menu.lst. According to my friend you just edit that file. I haven't tried editing mine because I don't need to on this computer. -- A veteran is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to ‘The United States of America’ for any amount, up to and including their life. _ _... ..._ _ _._ ._ ..... ._.. ... .._ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

- happily, editing the file /boot/grub/menu.lst now seems to work OK in OpenSuse 12.2 ....................... best regards -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi Koenraad I doubt whether the hobbyists here will agree, but I believe that the most important issue here is the weekend. If you need both OS's then you could install whichever one you want to dual boot with on VirtualBox whilst you are at work. That will give you a 2 day weekend:) You can always rsync it back when you've got grub2 sorted. The other alternative is to run your chosen OS from a USB memory stick. That way you bypass the need for having a hard disk. TGIF. L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Personally, I've always got on better with Ubuntu's boot management than opensuse's so I would patch things enough to get ubuntu running again and then use its update-grub.
Side-question : can Opensuse and Ubuntu live together using the same partition for /home ?
Yes but for sanity I would recommend separate home directories and then symlink the next level down together (Pictures, Documents etc). That way all the .configuration files for each system are kept separate but your own files are shared. If other suggestions don't work you may consider trying this: http://www.supergrubdisk.org/ It is a live CD built for grub repairs. Regards, R.Soskic -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi, Thanks for the pointer. Unfortunately it seems not to work. I can boot but if I try to detect grub or OS, it just sits at a prompt. And that's with an older version. With a newer version I have display problems. So I deferred the installation until I get a chance to research further.
