[SuSE Linux] Compiling Kernet

I have attempted to recompile my kernel suse5.3 to add networking The recompile worked without problems, I used the instructions in the Linux network book by Butzen and Hilton. However when I went to restart the kernel the startup ran for a few lines and then said it could not start a console. System is a 133Mhz intel pentium and a houston board. Any help on how to determine what I did wrong and correct this would be appreciated. I'm using my previous kernel in the meantime. The first thing is to make sure you ran lilo once after installing your new kernel. It won't boot a new kernel if lilo isn't informed of it. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

There are many possible problems: Do you hava a SCSI system and forgot to compile the SCSI driver in. Maybe you forgot the needed filesystem(s). Many other possibilites. In order to be able to help you we need to know: - description of the hardware - the exakt error message (not some interpretation) - the config of the kernel

Any help on how to determine what I did wrong and correct this would be appreciated.
