I need help in finding and putting an "acceptable" C compiler in my PATH, because when I download a tarball (any tarball) in Personal 9.1 and then try to to the ./configure thing after it is untarred, I get an error message that I do not have an acceptable C compiler in my PATH. I pretty well installed the whole shooting match, and I don't really see much of a C compiler at all. Maybe this is something SUSE reserves for the special people who pop for the Professional version, but I did not want the 2.6 Kernel for reasons of hardware compatibility, so I ordered the Personal version for reasons of Kernel version. So how do I get the kind of basic usability I've been used to in "lesser" distros? Unless you know you have provided every program I'm going to need, don't hamstring me in getting them for myself. The ad says it has kernel 2.6. Is that wrong, you say?

I was having the same problem. I have ordered SuSE9.1 Pro Update. I purposely decided to go w/the Personal version since I got burned badly w/SuSE9 Pro Update. I figured it was cheap insurance that this one would work on my box. It does. Not being able to have full compilation capabilities is a PITB. Though I was able to track down a few libs to compile something simple, I was unable to do anything about libdvdcss or my favorite time-waster, 'Mahjongg' (which also has to be compiled). The rest of the libs seem to be very hard to find so it has become a major frustration for me, as well. Like yourself, I have been using Linux for awhile (off & on, for roughly nine or ten years) and am grossly disappointed that the Personal version has fewer items than the average downloaded distro. You may as well do it! :-) Upgrade! http://store.suse.com/dr/sat4/ec_Main.Entry?SP=10007&SID=40017&CID=0&CUR=840&DSP=0&PGRP=0&CACHE_ID=0 - -- ...CH Avoid doing business with 'The Link' ISP. 9.1 will shortly appear on mirrors of ftp.suse.com and you can download the individual RPMs. Minimally, you'll probably need: autoconf, automake, binutils, bison, flex, gcc, gcc-c++, glibc-devel, m4, and make In fairness to SuSE, the list of features on the website says explicitly that Personal has a 2.6 kernel but does not include compilation/development tools. -- JDL

You're missing the point. The personal version came about when tons of users all over the place were complaining that suse included too much stuff, that they were scaring away the users who crossed over from windows. These users, the argument went, had no use for 15 different text editors, no use for 10 different shells, and more often than not they can't eve spell 'compiler'. All they want is a distribution with a nice set of features, selected as 'best of breed' from linux apps, and a nicely laid out menu. And once their feet are wet and they have a little more experience, and they feel they want to do more with their machine, they can take the step up to the pro So you see, you are not the target market.

What I wish is that SuSE would put some kind of disclaimer on the Personal version or a listing of what it contains. I know I felt "bamboozled" the first time I bought personal because I just kind of expected gcc, make, etc. Preston

Please note the red cross in the line "Development tools and compilers" in "Personal" column on the mentioned page. Regards, -Kastus

Such things should be printed clearly on the outside of the box, not (only) on a web page - which you can not browse while shopping. (Disclaimer: I have not yet been able to see either box) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

There's also a cost. All those compiler and development packages have to be put together, maintained and (in some cases) developed and put onto DVDs. Some people don't want this and it's not unreasonable that those of us who do should pay for it. OTOH, I don't need all the manuals; so I just get the pro update package, which costs about the same as the personal edition. -- JDL
