[opensuse] vsftpd stopped working after power outage or using Yast2 Installation Server.
Hello, I tried to undo the instation server stuff. I removed it from rsync, http and I thought I had from ftp. vsftp.conf is the same as far as a diff from Aug last year and now. Because I could not get it to work I did a /etc/init.d/vsftpd stop and /etc/init.d/vsftpd start It did not fix it. Some how ftp://ftp.zenez.com/ stopped working. I am at a loss for what it might have done. I also ran the FTP Server Yast2 to see if that would help. All that seems to have done is now you do not get a listing every thing times out. Any ideas on how to get this back working. I have had a few people report it and google tries to spider it and it can not. Any ideas on how to get this working are greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Well some logs would be nice. What happens in /var/log/messages when as root you do # service vsftpd restart also what happens when you try to connect? also see if there is an ftp log in /var/log somewhere. It's been a long time since I've ran any ftp server except sftp w/ ssh. -- Michael S. Nothing in the logs nothing in /var/log/vsftpd.log Only thing in /var/log/messages is the stop and start.
What happens in /var/log/messages when as root you do
# service vsftpd restart
# service vsftpd restart Shutting down vsftpd done Starting vsftpd done
also what happens when you try to connect? also see if there is an ftp log in /var/log somewhere. It's been a long time since I've ran any ftp server except sftp with ssh.

List failed. ncftp / > quit I really am at a loss of what else to try especially the vsftpd.conf file is exactly the same as it was last Aug before the fresh installation of openSUSE 11.2. From what I can tell it was working till the sudden power outage that lasted 3 hours so all I was able to do was shut the system down and wait for the power to come back on as the UPS only gives me 30 minutes. I had not rebooted the system since using the yast2 Miscellaneous -> Installation Server being run. And ftp was working well. Now I am up after the power outage and ftp fails as shown above, But nothing in any of the logs. -- Boyd Gerber <gerberb@zenez.com> 801 849-0213 ZENEZ 1042 East Fort Union #135, Midvale Utah 84047 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Try turning off the firewall Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Try turning off the firewall
Same behavior with or without firewall on or off. -- Boyd Gerber <gerberb@zenez.com> 801 849-0213 ZENEZ 1042 East Fort Union #135, Midvale Utah 84047 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Well google tries now every hour to get a few files and then gives up. So my /var/log/xferlog.log has really surnk. Since this. I was having over 4000 files downloaded per day. Now I see only 12 attempts from google. -- Boyd Gerber <gerberb@zenez.com> 801 849-0213 ZENEZ 1042 East Fort Union #135, Midvale Utah 84047 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Try turning off the firewall
I have also tried removeing vsftpd in package management and re-installing it 2-3 times. Still no luck. -- Boyd Gerber <gerberb@zenez.com> 801 849-0213 ZENEZ 1042 East Fort Union #135, Midvale Utah 84047 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Any NAT involved? If so, you might want to load the nf_conntrack_ftp module. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (23.7°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That's a firewall problem; you have to look at the firewall logs, both on server and client. A network capture (ethereal aka wireshark) might help. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ftp - ----- FTP can be run in active mode or passive mode, which control how the second connection is opened. In active mode the client sends the server the IP address port number that the client will use for the data connection, and the server opens the connection. Passive mode was devised for use where the client is behind a firewall and unable to accept incoming TCP connections. The server sends the client an IP address and port number and the client opens the connection to the server.[3] Both modes were updated in September 1998 to add support for IPv6 and made some other changes to passive mode, making it extended passive mode[5]. - ------ Passive mode is easier on the client side (for the firewall), but difficult on the server. Active mode is easier on the server, dificult on the client. The problem is having to open a second "random" port that is not known when the firewall is configured, so it has to be opened at runtime. Thus the firewall has to have knowledge of the ftp connection, it has to track it. The symptom is a failed data connection. NAT is also a problem; readiing from the wikipedia again: - ----- The representation of the IP addresses and port numbers in the PORT command and PASV reply poses a challenge to FTP in traversing Network address translators (NAT). The NAT device must alter these values, so that they contain the IP address of the NAT-ed client, and a port chosen by the NAT device for the data connection. The new address and port will probably differ in length in their decimal representation from the original address and port. Such translation is not usually performed in most NAT devices, but special application layer gateways exist for this purpose. - ----- This is consistent with you not seeing entries in the server log. You might see entries in the firewall log. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
