Hi. I have a Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook C6155 with a win98SE partition on 10GB. The full capacity of the HDD is 20GB. The last and free 10GB I want to install with SuSE 7.3. Why are the 7.3 suggesting a shrinking of the WIN98 partition to 4GB ??. Erik Jakobsen - erik@urbakken.dk

Are you sure you're not overreacting? I have a 10GB *total* disk that I installed SuSE to (Win98 on the first 2GB), and the installer offered me an option of shrinking, but also offered me the option of simply using the remaining space... -- -=|JP|=- '01 B15 SE/PP | http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ | <))>< '95 SL2 Auto | cowboydren @ yahoo . com | _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi Jon. I'm not sure what you are meaning with "overreacting" ??. I was not offered to use the remaining space.

Hi Jon. I'm not sure what you are meaning with "overreacting" ??.
I was not offered to use the remaining space.
I installed 7.3 on to my laptop yesterday so my recollection of the sequence is pretty good. SuSE recommended a shrink of WinME to 4 GB and the options were: 1. Accept recommendation 2. Modify recommendation 3. Discard recommendation I chose Item 3 and then selected custom partitioning on the next installer screen. With custom partitioning everyone can be happy. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? DH/DSS Key - 0x7A1BEA01

Maybe it's a clever program? (honestly_speaking) 4GB is by long enough for an OS you don't need anymore (/honestly_speaking) .... Well, ok., I don't have a *good* explanation for this. Can you ignore this and leave it to 10GB and go on the way you wanted or will it stop you from doing so? Maybe its is. I do not know. I can choose the partitions as I want, but like to know why 7.3 come with the shrink suggestion, as there is space enough - with a 10GB partition - to do an install.

The same happens while installing SuSE 7.2, as though SuSE was expecting only one Windows-partition. To find your "lost" partition click on expert partitioning. Alternatively delete the free partition and let SuSE do the job - you'll get a chance to decide how much to shrink /e

I have an other computer running 7.2, but had not the same problem. It has a 10GB of WIN98SE, and 20GB for 7.2. Med venlig hilsen -Best regards. Erik Jakobsen - erik@urbakken.dk

I encountered something similar on an old 300 Mhz PII installing 7.3 to dual boot with NT. The 7.3 installer wanted to shrink a partition from 1 Gb to 390 Mb and didn't offer an alternative that I felt confident would preserve the data on the partition. I solved this one by deleting all the partitions on NT above the 1 Gb one. Then the 7.3 installer didn't offer to resize and installation could continue. I had defragmented the 1 Gb (vfat16) partition by copying the data back and forward between a higher partition; so all the data was in the first 390 Mb. Unfortunately, if I'd shrunk the partition there wouldn't have been any room left for new data. JDL erik@urbakken.dk wrote:

But how can I do the same here John ?.

Exactly what I had in mind :-)

It is being polite? It could have recommended 0%. :) (Sorry, couldn't resist!)
