I've had 8.1 pro for a couple of weeks, but have not yet had time to install. I typically do fresh installs as I have not had very good luck previously w/ upgrades. In any case a have a couple of pre-install questions: 1. How do I install from the DVD? My BIOS sees my dvd rom OK, but there is no boot option for DVD (explicitly that is). I have the usual choices like floppy, CDROM, SCSI, IDE0, IDE1, etc. Now that I think about it, since my SuSE 8.0 sees my DVD ok (I fixed the cdrom and dvd links after installing 8.0) perhaps it see it to install from. But any tips would be appreciated. 2. I could never get my HP 712C Deskjet working in 8.0. Yast2 recognized the printer etc., but whenever I tried to print a test page, nothing happened. A big point of confusion for me was (is) the relationship of CUPS and lprng. Whenever I opened Yast2 to install something, I always got a message about there being a conflict between CUPS and lprng. Ok, fine. I wanted to use CUPS so I uninstalled lprng. Then, whenever I tried to set up my printer using CUPS, I got messages that lprng was needed !! ???? This made no sense at all. Could someone please shed a little light on this? When I install 8.1, I want to start out having only what I need so as to avoid any such strange dependency problems. TIA, Mike ----------------------------------------------------- Cleary_Mike@emc.com ----------------------------------------------------- Yesterday it worked. Today it is not working. Windows is like that.

Just allow "Boot from CD" in the bios and it should work.

In 8.1 , though, the default install is CUPS only, so don't fiddle to start with and you should have no problems of this sort. Just Boot from CD, like John said. Be warned about a thing though: "No Package Selection Available in the DVD Installation" http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/mlasars_8.1_dvdinstall.html Good luck, Dan Laba -- Binaries might die, but source code lives forever
