Setting PROFILE in Grub
According to what I've read in the on line docs, I should be able to set a variable, such as PROFILE in Grub, by adding a line to menu.lst. I've added the line: append = "PROFILE=Home" But it doesn't appear to create the environment variable PROFILE. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? As far as I can tell, I've followed the instructions exactly. tnx jk

Do you mean scpm profile? It is not environment variable. As far as I know PROFILE is reserved for scpm.

What instructions? What is that your trying to achieve? Regards, -Kastus

I'm trying to set up different profiles on my notebook, for use on my home network and elsewhere. Here's a quote from the on line help. in the section on scpm: Profile Selection during Boot It is possible to select a profile during the boot process by providing the boot parameter PROFILE=<name-of-the-profile> at the boot prompt. In the boot loader configuration (/boot/grub/menu.lst), the option title reflects the name of the profile. For example: File: The File /boot/grub/menu.lst . . . append = "vga=0x317 hde=ide-scsi PROFILE=home"

adding parameters to Grub doesn't create environment variabels... any parameter you add to Grub will be passed on to the kernel as a kernel parameter

According to the on line help it does. For example: File: The File /boot/grub/menu.lst . . . append = "vga=0x317 hde=ide-scsi PROFILE=home" Then, /etc/rc.d/boot.scpm checks PROFILE to determine what profile to load.

That's true. But any parameter the kernel doesn't recognize will be passed on to init as an environment variable

ah, that's interesting to know :)

That's lilo syntax, not grub. In grub, just add that PROFILE=Home to the "kernel" line.
