Hi All
What is the definition of vanilla Linux. ie what is vanilla linux and where can I get more info on "Vanilla Linux"
Vanilla Linux means the Linus Torvalds kernel, without any patches applied. Have a look at http://www.kernel.org/ -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A. P. J.
There really isnt such a thing as "Vanilla" Linux. Each distribution takes the kernel adds loads of precomplied software from various sources and there you go a functioning distribution. Really only the kernel is Linux the rest is a mish mash of software from various sources. Each distribution sets things up slightly differently re where files go and how the boot process works however you can't say one is correct and one isn't as there is no real standard that you can compare them against. Some people will argue one way of doing things is better than another but it gets religeous so best to keep clear :) I suppose the nearest you can get to "vanilla" Linux would be to follow the instructions from the Linux From Scratch web site and build your own linux box compiling every single program from scratch. Vanilla Linux was a rapper who was popular in the 90s. He made his name with the popular single, "Microsoft can't touch this." -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER1@MN.RR.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE

Go to yast2- install packages and search for kernel. there are two rpms. kernel-source.rpm is for the SuSE kernel sources and linux.rpm is for the vanilla surces. I installed linux then copied the files from /usr/src/linux-2.4.4 to /usr/src/linux-2.4.16 downloaded all patches and installed per instructions from linux.org configured the kernel and compiled it. now i am running kernel2.4.16 on my suse 7.2 good luck.... harry Jerry Kreps wrote:
