[opensuse] trying to re-add USB printer
HI I've had a Samsung laser connected on an USB port for a few years now, all working quite well. I change the cartridges and they were all recognised by the printer fine but i could no longer print anything. So i went back to basics and decided to delete it and re-add it. Its aSamsung CLP-325W (wireless) laser. Now, using Yast (and CUPS), detection of the printer will not find a USB connection. It comes back with the following options but no USB: 1. a serial:/dev/ttyS0. 2. socket: and ipp: network addressed with correct model but also cannot print a test page (error: "Unable to add document to print job") 3: parallel:/dev/lp0 The "Connection Wizard" gives you a USB option but there is nothing in the list to select. I've tried moving the printer USB cable to other working slots but still no joy. Anybody have any ideas how i can get an opensuse 13.2 tumbleweed KDE 4.14.5 system to recognise a printer on a USB port? My Canon USB scanner works fine. regards Ian -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Ian: Maybe the printer broke. My guess based on the info you gave. Have you tried a different printer on that computer? Have you tried that printer on a different box? Did you make a system change immediately prior to the printer quitting? Fred -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I've plugged it into my girlfriends Win7 laptop and it detected it via USB quite happily and it prints via the cable and wireless as well via Win7 It looks like Yast and CUPS don't test the USB ports for printers, only serial, parallel and network.

Fred usually, usb printer are installed silently, without any user intervention. I don't know what is your problem, but if the printeer stopped working, it may be the same problem that prevent it to install

I have a brother printer that I had working under all of 11.x and 12.x with /CUPS/USB. After I upgraded my phone and got a tablet I converted it to run off the network rather than dedicated to the USB on the server. So I can't tell you about 13.x or Tumbleweed. Its possible this is now one of the things that is in the category of "yes, that's how it used to be but we campaigned/broke all that", -- A: Yes. > Q: Are you sure? >> A: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation. >>> Q: Why is top posting frowned upon? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

i've just loaded up an old laptop that has a version of tumbleweed still using kernel 3.18.01 and the printer is detected quite happily. i guess i should update tumbleweed on it and see it it still detects the USB printer.

It is udev that should do the work. Just going through hoops to try and log a bug in Bugzilla for opensuse
It is udev that should do the work. You may find the definition for your printer in /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/ Maybe in 70-printers.rules and in combination with /usr/lib/systemd/system/configure-printer@.service
I guessed it might be an area to investigate. i've not done any reconfiguring of the basic system from openSuse so maybe if it is an issue/bug, it will need to be resolved there. i checked the size of udev-configure-printer on my old working laptop with my non-working tower system. the version numbers were exactly the same according to Yast 1.5.4-1.1 but the sizes were different by 1k and the build time was different by about 5 minutes. i've logged a bug and am providing debug data as required -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

yes, sorry. i have all installed. CUPS and Yast suffer the same fate whereby they don't find the printer on the USB port, they make no references to USB at all.

CUPS gives similar results for local printer - serial port #1, LPT #1, HPLIP - i.e. No USB port connected printers it looks like whatever does the discovery of printers that both Yast and CUPS use is flawed printing set up on any systems is crap

Right now I blame Apple. Perhaps we should roll back and re-implement the system that came with old UNIX SVR4. That was clear, understandable and flexible, used visible scripts and scheduling mechanisms. You don't like stock, it was easy to rip out and replace. Same experience here...I went from 132. to Tumbleweed the other day and Kyocera PS printer does not work any longer (it can print its own self-test page) nor it's possible to detect/configure it with either YAST or directly via CUPS. Same printer is detected on my netbook which also has TW, but not same updates. Will try to investigate further... Sounds similar to mine, i've logged a bug https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=920937

I have two networked printers that work with 13.2. Both are setup on TW BUT will not print anything. Had same problem but solved: rpm -qa cups-filters* cups-filters-foomatic-rip-1.0.58-4.1.x86_64 cups-filters-1.0.58-4.1.x86_64 cups-filters-cups-browsed-1.0.58-4.1.x86_64 cups-filters-ghostscript-1.0.58-4.1.x86_64 Do not recall which of the cups-filters* was missing but got no notice that printing failed, just didn't print. After adding the missing cups-filters* package, it just worked :^). gud luk, -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I did some testing based on 13.2 and then updateing CUPS to the same version as TW, gives me still full detection and after installing the driver (ppd), a working printer. Return to standard 13.2 and updateing udev removes the prior working printer. Based on that, I'd lay the finger on udev as cause here. CUPS gets the false blame, as for detection it relays on udev. No more time available for testing that, sorry. - Yamaban. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

agreed as Yast fails to detect printer as well so it points to a lower layer issue
