Installing Netscape 7.1 on SuSE 8.2
I have been trying to install Netscape (following the instructions). When I type ./netscape-installer form the installation directory (as the instructions, um, instruct) I get the following message. Xlib:connection to ":0.1" refused by server Xlib: Invalid XDM-AUTHORIZATION-1 key (failed by comparison) Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.1 What does this mean and how do I fix it. I have installed netscape before (on Mandrake 9.0) using this method, and I have never seen this error before. What do I need to do to fix this. Thanks, -=Thinker

The error is because you su'ed to root in an xterm but the X session is owned by you..the user. :) If you want to install things like this ...then do this. 1. open xterm 2. type sux 3. type root passwd 4. install the program Cheers! :) -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org ----- If two men agree on everything, you can be sure that only one of them is doing the thinking.
Pardon the non-answer, but do you really need to bother with Netscape? As I understand it, this is the excellent Mozilla loaded with baggage intended to get you to patronize AOL. Moreover, even I, a Linux ignoramus, managed to install Mozilla satisfactorily (see the gruesome details of my message header for supporting evidence).
i presume you've been using su. try sux instead. alternatively try a text mode installer if it exists (problem is caused by the GUI installer). I had the same problem installing matlab. if sux doesn't work you may want to look back in the list advice i got in relation to installing matlab. there are a few other ways around it. james. --- Thinker <thinker@thoughtprogress.com> wrote:

Something you can do is press ALT-F2, hit Options, check run as different user, type in the root password and execute the installer this way. On Sunday 03 August 2003 03:17, Thinker wrote:
