[opensuse] Zypper Cheat Sheet
As the newcomer I am to OpenSUSE, I found myself frequently consulting the zypper man pages, as well as the Zypper Usage section on the OpenSUSE site at [0], so I thought it would be nice to have a cheat sheet to consult when I had doubts, and since I looked for one and couldn't find it, I created one of my own to have all the data together. And of course, I want to share this with all of you, let me know what you think of it. I uploaded it to Google Docs, here are the links: page 1 --> http://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B-168RiY7i5_NDkzNGU0ZDEtOTc0Mi00MTg0LTk5YTQtOTNiMmQ5NTE2MTFj&hl=en page 2 --> http://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B-168RiY7i5_MmQ3MDMwM2EtZDEzNS00YWI1LThlN2UtYWYzY2Q2NTJjZjZj&hl=en They are on pdf format since google docs wouldn't allow me to upload the .svg files. Also, please let me know if for any reason I infringed any licenses or anything, since as you can see I included the OpenSUSE logo. Hope it is ok. I really like this, these pages (after proofreading, what I'm not able to do) should be included on the zypper page! thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.org http://news.opensuse.org/2009/04/13/people-of-opensuse-jean-daniel-dodin/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Would that all "Newcomers" would be so thoughtful :) Frankly, While the MAN pages are a tremendous help for Linux and many programs, IN ADDITION to the MAN pages, the format you have so thoughtfully provided is a welcome addition. If more/all of the major system administration chores had similar 'Cheat Sheets', I think it would really help. One of the deficiencies of MAN pages is that they are written by 'technocrats', eg, the author of the program (in many cases), who *knows* how to use the program and is well versed in most of the support functions and programs that a 'newbie' often knows little or nothing about. Your 'Cheat Sheet' provided a concise listing of many of the most needed uses of (in this case) ZYPPER *and* enough examples of its' use to accomplish the stated use to allow a user of the sheet to 'get the idea' about how to use the command and its' switches. So, You're Hired!!! There are several hundred commands used by administrators of systems that *should* have similar 'Cheat Sheets' developed to supplement, not replace, the MAN pages. The sheets you developed are immediately useful with little assumption of knowledge a new user might not have, but desperately needs. Take on 'FSCK' and maybe 'BADBLOCKS' and um, most of what is in /sbin <grin>. Seriously, In 'Doze, most people know about 'ChkDsk C:', and stuff like that, but have no clue about how to do simple system maintenance in their new Linux environment. "Seasoned" Linux admins *know* all about all of these commands, (don't they?) but 'Newbies' won't make it to 'seasoned' if their systems aren't maintained, it will eventually crash and burn and they will go back to 'Doze. Thanks for your efforts.... Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Juan and all, I agree with everyone that these are great. The pdf's may be a little large for US 8 1/2 x 11 paper. I think A4 is slightly larger and you went right out to the edge. More importantly, it reminds me I think a new CLI feature / script is needed to work in conjunction with zypper dup. At least for me, the most error prone aspect of doing a dist upgrade this way to getting the repositories correct. A simple script (dist_upgrade_to_factory) that added the correct repositories and disabled the old repositories would be great. And then as a last step it could call zypper dup. If the variation on repository name is too great, then it could at least have a simple loop the printed each repository and let the user select yes / no for disabling them. If others agree, I can add this to openfate. Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I will be creating an account later and try to edit the Zypper Usage
page to upload the files, or at least link to them.
But I'd like to know your opinion in regards to where I should locate
it, since that Cheat Sheet reflects most of the information on that
page. Should it go at the beginning? i.e. "The short and compressed
version of everything you're about to read". Or at the end i.e. "All
that you just read, you can have it compressed on two pages"?

I have updated the Cheat Sheet with the changes suggested by Jano. I
have uploaded the updated version of the letter format but for some
reason I'm failing to upload the a4 version (I upload the updated
version, but it keeps showing the old one =S). I would also like to
know if (as suggested by Satoru) it would be possible to upload the
original svgs (I could start playing around with the wiki code, but at
this point I'm really tired and kind of frustrated with the upload of
the a4 version, and I don't want to break anything on the page).
Rajko, I'd appreciate your help with this.

Hi Juan, all,

I have updated the Cheat Sheet with the changes suggested by Jano. I have uploaded the updated version of the letter format but for some reason I'm failing to upload the a4 version (I upload the updated version, but it keeps showing the old one =S). I would also like to know if (as suggested by Satoru) it would be possible to upload the original svgs (I could start playing around with the wiki code, but at this point I'm really tired and kind of frustrated with the upload of the a4 version, and I don't want to break anything on the page). Rajko, I'd appreciate your help with this.
This is some awesome work -- thanks for this!
If you're interested in doing this sort of thing, it'd be great if
you'd join the openSUSE Marketing team/list. I'd like to use these in
the future, possibly print some up to hand out at shows.
Might be cool to have some more general command references for
openSUSE as well.
Do we now have the source on the wiki somewhere?
Best,
Zonker

Thanks a lot for your words. =)
Just a few minutes ago I subscribed to the marketing mailing list.
In regards to the source files, I'll be sending them to you directly,
since I've tried to upload them to the Zypper Usage page along with
the pdfs, but I'm unable to. I tried both .svg and a zip file with the
four svgs, but I get an error message saying those are not recommended
formats.
Regards,
Juan

Hi Juan,
http://en.opensuse.org is wiki, so anybody with Novell account can edit it. Novell account is just replacement for common wiki login, like one on Wikipedia.
yes, but how can we upload a pdf? I could find the syntax for an image, not for a pdf file jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.org http://news.opensuse.org/2009/04/13/people-of-opensuse-jean-daniel-dodin/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

And of course, I want to share this with all of you, let me know what you think of it. I uploaded it to Google Docs, here are the links:
They are on pdf format since google docs wouldn't allow me to upload the .svg files.
These sound really useful. Could you please post them somewhere as PDF documents (i.e. http//..../xxx.pdf ), not buried under Google's Web API.
(Since Google started mangling links in searches, I no longer trust them to do anything other than serve plain files - the way my machine is set up the links you gave resolve into "google isn't willing to talk to you")
Thanks, Dave
With the user's permission, I think the zypper cheat sheets should be added to the openSUSE website. Roman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks and great job!
Also, please let me know if for any reason I infringed any licenses or anything, since as you can see I included the OpenSUSE logo. Hope it is ok.
Logos are usually copy righted and cannot be used without specific consent from the owner. To be on the safe side I would suggest you remove them. -- Arun Khan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Juan! Very good job, indeed! :O) Few comments: * the cheat sheet should mention zypper version it is describing Ideally, this should be the latest stable version (currently 1.0.x). * why not just mention one of the three means of getting command help (i would use 'zypper help [command]', the other two are for those used to --help/-h, and are common in linux world) * in modifyrepo examples, the following one might be more interesting than -Ka (that goes for the zypper/Usage wiki page, i'll change it): zypper mr -kt # enable rpm files caching for all remote repos * adding repos: the example needs an alias * in Selecting Packages, by capability, i'd put zypper in 'perl(Log::Log4perl)' instead of one of those two. That'll make it more obvious what a capability is. * ... by specifying an .rpm file, the example could be: zypper in skype-2.0.0.72-suse.i586.rpm * in Zypper in Scripts, the 'zypper --non-interactive' update should now be 'zypper --non-interactive patch' in fact (and given the comment). * Packages Locks: the subsection title should be "Lock Packages", not "Lock all Pacakges" That's it for now. I see the cheat sheet is already on the zypper's wiki page, good! Thanx a bunch again! :O) I hope you'll get a few followers :O)
Looking at the examples on that page, i guess i should come up with a few improvements here and there :O) -- cheers, jano Ján Kupec YaST team ---------------------------------------------------------(PGP)--- Key ID: 637EE901 Fingerprint: 93B9 C79B 2D20 51C3 800B E09B 8048 46A6 637E E901 ---------------------------------------------------------(IRC)--- Server: irc.freenode.net Nick: jniq Channels: #zypp #yast #suse #susecz ---------------------------------------------------------(EOF)--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Thanks a lot for your words Jano! I'm rushing out the door right now,
but I will be working to include the changes you suggested as soon as
I have the time.
Also, thanks to you and the rest of the team for the great work you
do! This cheat sheet is little compared to that.

Juan
