[S.u.S.E. Linux] Adaptec Ultra2W Boot Disk?
Any word on a SuSE boot disk to use for installation onto a SCSI drive controlled by an Adaptec Ultra2Wide (that's U2W, not UW) as included on the ASUS P2B-LS mobo? Once again, I'll mention that if one wants a FAST MOB that meets SPECS, ASUS has NEVER been the maker to do that! Get a dual Tyan and save yourself the grief. Fred -- Fred A. I have to amend this as I was not aware that there wasn't a driver! Foolish me, as I assumed there would be one by now!!! However, it doesn't change the fact that ASUS has a history of being an "odd-ball" and is why I won't use them at Cornell. Fred -- Fred A. Miller, Systems Administrator Cornell Univ. I have no experience with them...as well as a few others. I've heard mixed reports from some of the other Sys. Admins. on campus at Cornell. I've tried Intel MOB's and found them to be some of the worst ever made...surprisingly. I first tried ASUS when they first came out with '386 boards, and they were absolute pure JUNK!! I've "spot checked" them since, and they aren't much better than they were then, IMHO. I used to use AIR for awhile, till they lost their good engineers, then after a LOT of searching and testing settled on Tyan and haven't had any problems since. I have one of the very first P-II BX (100Mhz) MOB's they certified. I've had NO problems with it with ANY OS I've installed....all were tested before I put SuSE's Linux on it, which is the only OS that resides on it now and all that will. By the way, if you're ever interested in having a box built PROPERLY, get one from CSI in CO (800-998-0170). Small operation that builds to order as standard equip. with Tyan for MOB, Matrox for video, and Nanao for monitors. They use Everfit cases with minimum 235W powder supplies (not the cheap 75W you see with most clones), and ball bearing fans throughout. Because I'm responsible for ALL the hardware ('puters, small printers, RS-6000, band printers, a new Printronix printer, etc., etc., I have to keep it ALL working myself, I WILL NOT get any marginal hardware....period. Hope this helps. Best, Fred -- Fred A. Miller, Systems Administrator Cornell Univ. I personally prefere ASUS. I have less problems with Asus than TYAN. I really think the AMI Bios from TYAN sucks. One does not have enough influence in the settings. Right now I am using an TYAN and I never had so much problems with a mainboard. There are many small things that I took for granted on ASUS main boards that don't work as well on TYAN (Memory is one of the big things). IMHO. Maybe after your 386 from ASUS you should try a never one. If you'd read what I wrote, you'd realize I've tried a number of them since their '386's. Cornell Univ. is a very large institution. I've recommended Tyan to a number of departments and NO ONE has any problems. Someone has to keep ASUS in business.....I guess. Fred -- Fred A. Miller, Systems Administrator Cornell Univ. The 5.2 boot disks did not support the U2W Adapter. The upcoming 5.3 disks will have experimental support for it. I hope I can put a first experimental boot disk on our ftp server today or tomorrow. But please don't expect everything to work already. Especially currently narrow devices on that controller won't work. For additional info please read ftp.dialnet.net:/pub/linux/aic7xxx/7890-Status Check this file often.
