Keyboard not recognized -- new install w/new MB, processor, HDrive, etc.
Hi, everyone. Sending this distress call for my wife. We have just rebuilt her pooter. Trying to do an install (SuSE 9.3) on a virgin 250 GB IDE hard drive. Also, new Gigabyte MB, new Athlon 64 3200+ processor, new EVGA video card. We're using her old memory -- 1GB of DDR226 PC2100 memory (2 X 512). Upon starting up the pooter the screen to install SuSE comes up. We use the keyboard to select "Install." So far so good. It starts up and we click "accept" on the Novell licensing agreement. But after that we can't do any entry using the keyboard. We've tried 4 keyboards; none work. We cannot tab or do anything with any keyboard. So we can't configure anything where you need to keystroke (e.g., entering a password, or setting up the hard drive). Note: initially we could not get a PS2 mouse to work. Pooter would not recognize it. Then we tried a USB mouse and that was recognized. So we have a mouse at least. But we do not have a USB keyboard to try. It is so strange that initially the keyboard did work right at the start where you tell the pooter you want to do an install. But for some reason the pooter is losing the keyboard after it starts the install process. Any ideas on how we can get a keyboard recognized so that we can install SuSe? Many thanks. Gil and Judith

check the bios of the mb to see if it sees or will allow you to use the kb. if not then its hardware not software problem. In that case try to wiggle the kb connector it might be loose. if that fails you might have a bad mb. -- _______ _______ _______ __ / ____\ \ / / ____|_ _\ \ / / | | \ \ /\ / / (___ | | \ \ / / | | \ \/ \/ / \___ \ | | \ \/ / | |____ \ /\ / ____) |_| |_ \ / \_____| \/ \/ |_____/|_____| \/ | \ /|\ || |\ / |~~\ /~~\ /~~| //~~\ | \ / | \ || | X |__/| || |( `--. |__ | | \| \_/ / \ | \ \__/ \__| \\__/

Carl, thanks for the reply. What do I check in the BIOS? I looked. All I see is: USB keyboard support: enabled USB mouse support: enabled Some additional information: We just tried loading Knoppix. Had similar problems. Sometimes it loads Knoppix and other times it stops before the desktop loads. When it does load Knoppix it recognizes the keyboard! That's great. However, in doing so it sometimes then does not recognize the mouse. Hit or miss. It does not seem to be an intermittent problem with the keyboard port. In all cases (Knoppix or SuSE) the keyboard works initially, but then with SuSE at least it stops working once you initiate the install. In addition, as previously reported, sometimes the pooter does POST and just as often it does not. Further, this is the 2nd Gigabyte board that is having these problems. Doing the same thing as the board we sent back. It does not matter if we use 1 or 2 sticks of 512 MB memory (DDR266 PC2100), and it does not matter if when using 2 sticks they are side by side or separated by an empty slot. So, problems no matter if it's SuSE or Knoppix (different problems, but problems none-the-less). What next, coach? ;o) Thx. Gil

Your still using both memory sticks. Try them one at a time in each slot. If you still have a problem get your refund on that mb and find another. I have a Soyo PIII no problems. But its the older standard DIMM memory. Some of these very new boards are not supported. -- _______ _______ _______ __ / ____\ \ / / ____|_ _\ \ / / | | \ \ /\ / / (___ | | \ \ / / | | \ \/ \/ / \___ \ | | \ \/ / | |____ \ /\ / ____) |_| |_ \ / \_____| \/ \/ |_____/|_____| \/ | \ /|\ || |\ / |~~\ /~~\ /~~| //~~\ | \ / | \ || | X |__/| || |( `--. |__ | | \| \_/ / \ | \ \__/ \__| \\__/

I have already tried the memory sticks one-at-a-time. Also tried 1 stick in slot 1 and 1 stick in slot 3 (non-adjacent). Problems persist in either case. I am going to exchange the board since this is the 2nd with similar problems. Will post to the list when new board arrives and if SuSE 9.3 loads successfully. Thx! ;o) Gil
