I now have BibleTime running. And Cheatah! Actually it was a piece of cake. I messed around with trying to compile the tar version to no avail, so I decided to download the SuSE rpm and try it out. Bang! Version 0.31 is very nice! ReiserFS has been faultless KDevelop is working Zip is working Scanner is working Printer is working Quanta+ is working and uploading to my webpage neatly! QCad is working nicely Star Office is working KMail and Knews (KNode) work beautifully, Netscape is working. FreeAmp makes beautiful music XEPhem and XPlN both work great PostgreSQL and pgaccess is working great Gimp is great... OSS sound is great. MuPAD is 50% great, but it works. The KOffice stuff work ok for its beta level I believe I have more stuff working under 7.1 than I ever had under any previous distro, except 6.3, but I can't remember that far back. My wife is going to love this machine! JLK

Jerry, For all the griping we've been doing, it's good to see a positive post. I started to reply to your message of last night, but half way through I realized I was deffending my ego, not my opinion. You made a good point about the UI being suitable for most functionality. I have a huge wishlist for the KDE line of porducts. And if I weren't constantly trying to push my systems to the limit they'd probably be pretty stable. I notice one of the German mirrors of ftp.suse.com is running SuSE 4.x. That says a lot. There are a few splinters here and there, but, as you said KNode is very nice. (address completion in the to filed and the ability of to check new trys in the spell checker are two big items on my wish list.) Try the colors for different levels of reply text, but be forewarned, the defaults may cause rather sever optical strain. I love that feature. It makes reviewing a conversation much easier. One of the coolest features is the way it handles crashes - as rare as they are. It has thus far, restored almost all of my messages that I was working on. That's the kind of feature that really matters. The KDE is proof positive that Open Source Software can produce a world class product. SuSE's done great things with it as well. I do like Yast2. It has much room to grow. Take a look at the development tools for yast2. I haven't had time to do anything but read the descriptions. Another thing I really like about this distribution is that it is the first one where I feel as though I can log in as me rather than root and still administer the system. There are so many neat features I keep finding everytime I do something I feel like a kid on an Easter Egg hunt. Steve

I tried YaST2, from my user account, to add and remove some files. It worked beautifully! VERY NICE! Cudos! SuSE! I can see myself staying logged in as me and using YaST2 from the menu option to do my system maintainance... No need to quite KDE2, logout os me and in as root, or open an xterm and 'sux -' to root This capability has changed my mind about YaST2.

I spend hours going through menus, playing with programs, browsing the CDs and trying stuff. My wife doesn't understand how I can spend so much time "adjusting' my box. ;-) JLK
