Thanks John, You not only gave me the solution and identified the problem, you also showed me a great tool for handling Cups which I was not aware of. Thanks to others for their suggestions. Sorry I forgot to mention I am using cups and that the printer was accidentally switched off during a print job. Regards Dave

If you're using cups, try using kups (system > tools > CUPS administration tools) or http://localhost:631/ to restart the printer. Cups sometimes stops if there is an error, for example, shutting the computer down during a print job. JDL
