Correct, assuming that RAID has been configured. As for real hardware RAID, all of the SCSI raid cards I am familiar with do real hardware raid. There are numerous of them from lots of vendors. If you want hardware RAID for ATA drives, then the only one I know is 3ware, but I assume others exist. I don't know what the situation is for SATA raid. I'm guessing it is more like SCSI where all the solutions are hardware RAID. Greg -- Greg Freemyer
Hi everyone Fisrt of all I wan't to which every one who might be concerned : MERRY CHRISTMAS ! Sorry to the others ! And to EVERYONE (except chinese maybe !) HAPPY NEW YEAR ! Now start the question : The lab has bought a DELL PowerEdge SC420 server which include 2 SATA 160 Go HD... on an Adaptec RAID controller. I don't know yet exactly which Adaptec controller it is but what's sure IS : Both HD are not recognised during installation (Suse pro 9.1 DVD, 32 bit) If i disable the RAID in the BIOS... install perform OK (at least until now, YOU security update is on process) Is there a way to be able to use RAID on this computer without buying another RAID controller ? Is there a special driver I should download and use during install instead of the standards one ? Is SuSE 9.2 correcting the problem ? I would be grateful for any help or advice...this is my first RAID configuration (and my firsts SATA disks !!). Mirroring is most wanted in this situation, since the server will be a data server for all the department. Your question 100% revolves around the adaptec controller. So when you figure out what you have, re-post. FYI: It sounds like you have the hardware, just go into the controller's bios setup. I'm sure it will tell you there what kind of controller it is. FYI2: There is no way in the world I would use SUSE 9.1 in a production environment. The kernel was just too new at that point, and major changes had to be made to the userland tools. If SLES 9 is too expensive for you, then look at SUSE 9.2 Greg -- Greg Freemyer On Thu, 23 Dec 2004 18:53:26 +0100, Matthias Titeux <matthias.titeux@toulouse.inserm.fr> wrote:

Mattias, on adaptec's site for some of the controllers there are drivers for SuSE 9.0 and 9.1, and SLES 9. Also there are sources if you want to compile :) Here's the link: http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/suppbyproduct.jsp?sess=no&language=English+US&cat=%2FTechnology%2FSerial+ATA&fromPage=driverindex If your controller is 2410SA or 2810SA, you are in the game. Thanx to everyone who replied to my message. I think the controller not hardware RAID. It is software RAID, provided by the BIOS on the card.... so i ended up by using soft RAID ! The system is working, soft RAID is working... it will be enough ! Thank you again Matthias __________________________________ Matthias Titeux, PhD INSERM U563 - CPTP Departement de Genetique fonctionnelle des maladies des epitheliums Batiment Lefebvre - 2eme etage CHU Purpan Avenue de Grande Bretagne 31059 Toulouse Cedex 03 FRANCE --------------- Tel: 33 (5) 62 74 45 03 _________________________________

Matthias Ahh this is better than hardware, as you can take either disk and use it in any sata card, not just on a card of the same type!
