[S.u.S.E. Linux] Mathematica, Linux, and mathpass?

Are there any other MMA users on this list? I had a technology moment and was thus required to reinstall the OS files and recompile the kernel. When I was done I couldn't start MMA because my math ID had changed. Does anybody have a similar story to tell? Kenneth, Well that is an interesting way to phrase the question. I don't know what I actually NEEDED to reinstall, I just forced a complete system update from YAST. Not the most pleasant option, but my system was really hosed. It would not recognize any of the caux devices nor the msdos type file system, It kept saying that the root partition was read only, and it would not run kdm. Rather than trying to untangle the mess I just did a reinstall. Fortunately It did not turn too many things back to a state from which I had updated. I'm tough, I don't need no stinkin' tape back ups. . . NOT! I did a real dumb thing and tried to continue t0 work while I was running the KDE 1.0 install. I crashed Yast. Not sure how, but it did some damage :-( Steve -- [<A HREF="http://counter.li.org"><A HREF="http://counter.li.org</A">http://counter.li.org</A</A>> Registered User #79059] S.u.S.E. Steve, OK, so now we know we have a rather messy situation. Tell me what are the problems that you have right now and we'll try to figure out a possible solution. And, BTW, tape backups are really nice in situations like this. I know, in the worst case, you just have to backup all your data, mail, and passwords database, and do a complete reinstall from scratch (ie: doing 'mke2fs' as well), which I think you might have to do. Kenneth, Thanks for the offer, but the forced update to the system seems to have fix all the problems I was having. I contacted MMA by phone and asked them about the problem. The same person who I mailed the day before about the problem was the one with whom I spoke. She said that her husband runs MMA on linux and has not had a problem with the password when compiling the kernel. She also said their tech support did not think I should have a problem. Perhaps it was the combination of the recompile and the replacement of the OS files that confused MMA. I'm late onto this thread and it looks as if you're OK now. However, in case it may be helpful in similar future cases: The "mathpass" file is in ***/mathematica/Configuration/Licensing/mathpass (where *** is wherever you hung the Mathematica installation off), and its content looks like <your_host_name> ####-#####-##### X####-#### \ ####-###-###::#:yymmdd <your_institution> (all on one line) where '#' denotes a digit, 'X' a letter, and yymmdd is the expiry date of your licence. The numbers are the ones supplied by Mathematica when you get the licence. The ####-#####-##### is the mathid, and the ####-###-### is a ""password" (mathpass). There is also a checksum in there somewhere. As far as I know, the numbers should remain valid. You need to make sure, however, that the hostname is what it was when you got the licence, and that this is what is returned by "uname -n" (or gethostbyname). Possibly it was this last item which went pear-shaped when you had your problems. Presumably it is OK now. Hope this helps. Actually, I have never used Mathematica before. But is mathpass the same "feature" as in Matlab? Regards, Kenneth Tan ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ C. Ted, Thanks for the info. It is a bit strange that when MMA sent my password the first time the hostname that was listed with the password was "machinename". This worked. The MMA documentation did say that I should not change my hostname. Well I didn't do that, but the next password they gave me was for my current (real) hostname. Not sure what's up with that. Just hope it doesn't become a habit. Steve -- [<A HREF="http://counter.li.org"><A HREF="http://counter.li.org</A">http://counter.li.org</A</A>> Registered User #79059] S.u.S.E. ALL, FYI: MMA tech support told me this was because I added ethernet card support to my Kernel.
