[opensuse] kde 3.5 konqueror MultiColumn View scrunched
Listmates, 11.0 x86_64 working in konqueror file manager listing the contents of /etc in multi-column view mode, the space for filenames is very short causing many of the filenames to be truncated from view. I have looked all over for the setting that controls filename field length and I can't put my finger on it. No doubt it is right under my nose, but it escapes me at present. Here is a screenshot: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/kde/konqueror-MultiColumn.jp... Any help pointing me to the setting to restore so I can see all of my filenames would be appreciated. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. After you select your view mode, down further on that same menu is Icon Size. I'm betting you have "Tiny" selected. -- ----------JSA--------- There are 10 kinds of people in this world, those that can read binary and those that can't. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

John, Your right about the "tiny" setting, but that doesn't control the filename field length. I have tried setting tiny, small, medium, larger, etc.. and for some reason it has no effect on the filename display length. One thing that does change is number of lines of text. With medium and above, you get two lines of text for the filename, but you still get basically the same 'length before the filename text wraps. To investigate further, I created a new file named "12345678901234567890". Here is what this crazy multi column view did in tiny, small, medium and large: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/kde/konqueror-MultiCol-tiny.... http://www.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/kde/konqueror-MultiCol-small... http://www.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/kde/konqueror-MultiCol-mediu... http://www.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/kde/konqueror-MultiCol-large... This may be something that was brought in during a recent update, but it is definitely new behavior. Generally, I use detail list view, but probably 10% of the time I use multicolumn view for viewing large directories where I am interested in filenames and not the details, like when looking at /etc. Normally, you get the filename fields that expand to accommodate any reasonable filename on a single line. Now we get the truncated filenames? I guess I'll just start grepping around in .kde and see if I can find a setting that will work. Thanks for the idea though. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. David,
Under Settings -> Configure Konqueror -> Appearance
What value do you have for "Width for Icon text"?
I can get similar behaviour to what you show if I pick a small value for that (50 pixels say). The installed default here was 600.

BINGO! It is a bug somewhere, because "Width for Icon text" was set to 600 by default. I changed it to 601 and magically the Width sprang back to what it should be. I changed back to 600 and all is still good. Evidently the setting was stuck at some arbitrarily low setting despite the default saying 600, changing it fixed it. Also, setting to 601 and then setting it back to 600 caused the following new line to be written to ~/.kde/share/config/konquerorrc: TextWidth=600 That setting was not present before and is not present in two other installs -- yet ;-) Thanks Don, saved from another forest for the trees issue. -- David C. It is for sure. Try to change to 1 line and some small number of pixels. Press Apply. It is overwriting icons. Press reload. All is OK, it will print part of the filename and 3 dots ;-) It is messed in more than one place. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
