[SLE] new trick...2 X sessions at the same time
Hi, I just learned this and I thought some of you might be interested. Maybe you already know this. I was under the impression that only 1 X session could be run at a time, sitting on F7. If you start one on F1, it will run on F7. Then is you go to F2 and issue " startx -- :1 "; it will start another session simultaneously on F8. I havn't tried 3 yet. :-) You need to use the <control-alt> in combo with F7 or F8 to swith between the 2. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
zentara wrote: yes, nothing new, but I always forget how to do that. ;-) You can start two sessions from bootup as well (again forgotten) i.e. to give the wife her screen and keep your own. Try to do that with windows... Another sensible thing is to run one server with 8bpp and the other in higher color resolution. (the number of apps. running only on 8bpp is close to zero, I just remember "old"? versions on "wabi") you can run probably as much as you like, or rather as your memory and swap likes. ;-)) Juergen

Perhaps my mistake was trying to start an X session on F4, but I tried using this command for one of my users, and then again as root on F1 - and I got an error something like: 'X server is already running. Fatal error. If the X server is closed, then unlock /var/lock/something...' What kernel are you running? Did you type startx or "startx -- :1" ? Also, I'm guessing that you need the Unix pty's going in the kernel? I'm a relative newbie. But some new things are in the latest kernels about virtual consoles, and I think you can get up to 256 of them.
