I just installed LILO in the MBR rather than the boot sector of the root partition and everything now works. 2 months delay in being able to use a CD-RW. I have no idea why this should be. The device is /dev/sr0 and not /dev scd0. Could it not be included in the documentation somewhere? I'd really like to thank everyone who has tried to help. Still no news from the still open ticket from SuSE. 6 weeks later. Now to try to understand xcdroast and stop it crashing! Thanks again, Steve.
