Hmm. This is strange. Does ~/.X.err give you any errors?
I will check this tonigh, my linux system is my personal computer, this account is my office account.
It seems to me that the monitor cannot catch the signal.
Maybe you configured a too high resolution of refresh rate?
BTW this part of configuring the Xserver is IMHO the trickiest part of tgetting Linux up (before the network of course)
Well, it heavily depends on your graphic card / monitor combination. Most models work out of the box without tweaking...
