not sure if the error is related or not, but adobe has let the linux version of acroread sit at version 5.0.9, while windows and mac have 6.0.1. if the pdf was created for acrobat 6, it may have compatibility issues..

Rikard, You might also want to give "kpdf" a whirl on this file. Gpdf & Kpdf are both using xpdf for their backend and it seems to be keeping up better than Adobe's acrobat for Linux.

I just came across a PDF document (http://www.ipl.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~hu/pub/lopstr03-yokoyama.pdf>) that gives Acrobat Reader 5.0.9 no problem at all but which causes the native Linux PDF applications such as "xpdf" and "kpdf" to hang. According to Reader's display of the document properties, this document purportedly conforms to PDF version 1.3 specification. It was apparently created on a Unix or Linux (-like) system from a TeX original document by "dvipdfm" (version 0.13.2c-j-pld). There seems to be some irony there...

I too have had some recent problems with some pdf files, but I'm not sure it's because they were generated for v6.x or if the pdf files were just poorly generated by a bad piece of MS software.

Yes, that's the second such pdf file I've had to send kpdf/xpdf into such a loop! Usually and for most pdf files, kpdf is much better in opening the files. Ghostview & GV or KGhostview all work nicely with the file you mention.

I agree. I use Acrobat Reader only for things like printing when the document page size is too large for the paper in my printer. Reader's ability to resize pages when printing is handy in that circumstance. Xpdf is decidedly slower than Reader, too.

Not sure what is sending Kpdf into such a tizzie though. It seems to be a few select files and my sources tell me that TeX does indeed produce good PDF 1.3 files. I know there was an update recently for xpdf from SuSE's security updates, so I don't know if the trouble started at that point or not.

I think there are a great many PDF files out there that originated as TeX documents and that cause no problems at all. In any event, if the problem is in the PDF document itself, then it's probably "dvipdfm" that's to blame, not TeX or its DVI output. My guess is probably that the problem is in xpdf, not in the software that produced the PDF file. I'm sure someone somewhere will sort it out sometime. And Anders would be right about this little problem. One note of warning I might give those thinking about using the newer freetype2 files though, is that it will break Mozilla's printing. Mozilla mail or any of the Mozilla programs that have come from SuSE's mirrors will not print any longer. I have not tried to use the Mozilla programs from mozilla.org. Firefox & Thunderbird works without problems though. Also, you might run into a problem compiling some programs with the new freetype2 installed. 9.2 users I don't believe will have to be concerned about this, since it comes with freetype2-2.1.9 files. Those with 9.2 installed now can give us feedback on Mozilla's printing behavior. Otherwise, since most of you folks don't use kpdf or xpdf, stay with your present freetype2 and all will remain well.
