Crash has trashed init 5/startx
SUSE 9.0 Pro Single User Auto Sign-On I tried to access an rpm file directory on an apparently bad cd and hung my system, desktop pIII 733mh. Upon rebooting system displays the 'Welcome' in many languages screen and stops. I am able to switch to a text console and log on as root or user but the system is very slow, takes about 4 minutes to give me the screen. Switching between consoles also almost stops (lengthy time). Killing the xserver, <ctrl><alt><bksp>, also leaves a very unresponsive text console. I can start my box to init 3 and then startx as user and the system is mostly normal, the 'Welcome in many languages' screen does _not_ appear but kde starts and all apps appear to work correctly. If I start to init 3 and the init 5, I get the same action described poorly above. I have the boot.log/msg files for the init 3/startx session, but I did not capture the logs for the init 5 startup 8^(. How do I rebuild the _normal_ startup sequence or recover from my clumsiness? thanks, -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org

I emptied /tmp and ran fsck.ext3 against / and /home and can see _no_ difference. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org

Any giveaways in /var/log/messages or other /var/log files? Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer Linux Only Shop.

Ended up being very simple but unnoticed until reading another post about a completely different subject. startx works from runlevel 3, .xinitrc present init 5 hangs, .xsession missing replaced .xsession from /etc/X11/xdm/sys.xsession The only thing, I am unaware of any changes that should be present in my .xsession. Oddity: in 8.1 there was an original copy of .xsession in /etc/skel but none in 9.0 ???? comments requested.... -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org

Strangely, after posting about .xinitrc/.xsession in another thread, I found by chance on the SDB, article http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/10/dcon_xsession_sl90.html which says that 9.0 doesn't use ~/.xsession, only ~/.xinitrc. Your experience suggests that this is untrue. Personally, I ln -s .xinitrc .xsession and I haven't noticed any problems. -- Vic Ayres

Do a tkdiff .xinitrc /etc/X11/xdm/sys.xsession and you will see there are considerable differences _although_ those differences may not make much noticeable visual difference ...???? -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org

Yes, I see what you mean. All I can say is that a long time ago I found the advice to symlink ~/.xinitrc and ~/.xsession and I've done that since with no apparent problems. -- Vic Ayres
