[opensuse] Help with Ethernet and wireless drivers
I am running Leap 42.3 and recently purchased an Alienware 13 R3 laptop that contains: 1. Qualcomm Atheros Killer E2500 Gigabit Ethernet Controller 2. Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 80211 ac Wireless Network Controller I ran Yast networking and no devices were discovered. Is there a way, some switch in modprobe perhaps, to tell which module is required? Is there an opensuse procedure or some other advice? I looked on google and found some Ubuntu links, but nothing relating to opensuse. I am running kernel-4.4.138-59.1. Is the one present in leap 15 a later version, or is there some other difference between the two? Is there a way in Yast to look for 15.0 package data from a 42.3 system? Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Being a new laptop, just install it again, but this time with 15.0. Or at least, test with the live iso. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

The fact is that they backport a huge number of things and there are a lot possibility of regressions as it seems. At leastI was told that, until someone "looked into it more accurately it would not be fixed". That means for me until the 4.12 kernel is gone (I fear Leap 16), this system will be problematic. However something has become better recently and wlan crashes less often. Guess it was the firmwareupdate for intel. For you it could well be the same. You may try by installing the 4.4 kernel of 42.3 and see if there it works. Then you should IMO file a kernel bug against the distribution. So, to answer your question: hardware that worked without issues in older kernel may result problematic in newer. _________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ Ihre E-Mail-Postfächer sicher & zentral an einem Ort. I have googled many times and found a common reply to my Ethernet problem. that is System requires updated firmware. I copied the error message: Direct firmware load for ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-5.bin failed with error -2 and searched the net for hw3.0/firmware-5.bin. I found one, and once I learned how to download a single bin file, tried to run the device. Now I get an "invalid firmware magic" message. From the "Linux Device Drivers" book, it says that modules are linked against vermagic.o. Evidently the code I downloaded was linked against another kernel. Not a real surprise. How do I request an updated version of the kernel-firmware package, where zypper informs me that that is where the files live. Yast tells me that I have version 20170530-20.1 installed, which is also shown as most current. Is this a bug report or is there some other method of requesting an package update? That's not a new card, it should be supported. Alienware is a fairly popular gaming laptop, I think that should be something supported out of the box (but apparently isn't)

If I understand correctly, to support the firmware, you are going to need to configure and build it into the kernel. Here on one wiki that looked useful in that regard: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Qualcomm_Atheros_QCA6174 Having laptop hardware not work is just damn frustrating. I went though this a number of years ago when I bought a latest/greatest toshiba desktop replacement laptop (wohoo P4 3.4GHz circa 04?) There was some hardware not yet supported and I went through fits to finally get it going. Since then, I've learned the value of buying last-years model :) -- David C. I do not understand all of the details. I downloaded a recent linux-firmware package package using suse search. There are many firmware-5.bin files, but none under hw3.0. The closest is QCA6174/hw2.1/. Why doesn't the suse group provide code against hw3.0? I do not know when it was released, but my google searches went back a few years. Google isn't always accurate:-( Is there a way to search what is in all of the linux-firmware offerings? As mentioned before, I downloaded linux-firmware-20180728 and unpacked and search the sources. But this is a lot of work just to determine if something exists. Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Don, I'm not 100% sure what the difference in the firmware 2.1 and 3.0 directories are, but if it is present in 2.1 and not in 3.0 and it is not working now -- then that is worth a bug report. Someone here that does more work on the kernel and tweaking modules for it will have to weigh in on how to work-around the magic-number mismatch between what you have and see if that can work in the interim. But since we have fragmented the opensuse lists so much, I don't have any great confidence that those folks are on this list anymore -- that may now be something you have to post to a new opensuse-xyz list to get good help with. -- David C. On Leap 15.0, the kernel-firmware package includes many files in the /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0 directory, including firmware-4.bin and firmware-6.bin though not firmware-5.bin which is available in hw1.0 and hw2.1 directories, so perhaps the solution is as simple as upgrading to the newer release of Leap? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
