[SuSE Linux] ftape
Hi, I have a old HP Colorado T1000 tape backup on my machine which I want to use with arcadeia to do backups. Do I have to rebuild the kernel to get support for this or can I just load some modules? I'm relatively new to SuSE, but it appears that SuSE, like other linuxes, ships with the older versions of ftape, and it is not compiled into the kernel. According to the ftape docs, this is correct. But you should get the latest (3.04d) version and *then* compile it as a module. Can't see a reason to recompile the kernel. Someone jump in if I'm wrong here. Paul M. True on all counts. The ftape code that comes with the kernel sources is old and buggy. I was under the impression that Claus' code was about to go into the kernel tree RSN, but it hasn't happened yet. Go to Claus' ftape page and get the latest version. Read the INSTALL file carefully and follow the instructions to build ftape as modules. You MIGHT run into the modversions problem and have to recompile your kernel, but probably not. <A HREF="http://www.math1.rwth-aachen.de/~heine/ftape/</A">http://www.math1.rwth-aachen.de/~heine/ftape/</A> I managed to stuff the 3.04d ftape code into the 2.0.33 source tree and build a kernel with ftape compiled in using the diffs on Claus's development page, but it took some fiddling to make it work. From around 3.04something on, ftape builds as modules with very little fuss and works quite well. -- Bud Rogers <budr@sirinet.net> <A HREF="http://www.sirinet.net/~budr/zamm.html</A">http://www.sirinet.net/~budr/zamm.html</A> - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
