Greetings, I just dumped my /dev/hda1 with MS98 on it to use VMware, since Win4Lin doesn't support SuSE 7.0. The most nagging thing is that VMware doesn't pick up on my config correctly ? I see this error when trying to run /usr/sbin/vmware-config.pl ------------------------------------------------------------------- Trying to find a suitable vmmon module for your running kernel. None of VMware's pre-built vmmon modules is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this script to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include] --------------------------------------------------------------------- What is the fix for this problem folks ? Linux papa 2.2.16 #1 Wed Aug 2 20:22:26 GMT 2000 i686 unknown Thanks /Dee

I think you are probably getting the above messages because SuSE installs an SMP kernel by mistake on non-SMP systems and VMWare does not come with precompiled modules for SMP kernels. (That is what happened to me, giving me the same results when I installed VMWare on SuSE 7.0.) Another possibility -- be sure you have the latest version of VMWare. Prior to their most recent version they did not have precompiled modules for the 2.2.16 kernel (SMP of not). Even so, this is not really a problem. VMWare will compile the appropriate modules for you. The above messages are simply the first steps in this process. If you continue on, accepting the defaults, everything should be OK. Unless... You might not have all the development tools installed for VMWare to complete the job. In this case, use Yast to install the gcc compiler and the kernel sources then rerun the config script. ~here is a way to install a non-SMP kernel, but I have not personally done so. -- ____________________________________________________________________ Robert Paulsen paulsen@texas.net
Hi Dee, I had the exact same problem. The only way I could get it to work was to upgrade to kernel 2.2.18. The problem with that is that in trying to help someone else to do the same, I cannot now find the $%^&* thing on SuSE's ftp server. Ed On Monday 01 January 2001 18:04, Dee McKinney wrote:

I hate to have to reply to my own post, but I had a boo-boo in it. I am on kernel 2.2.17 --- not 2.2.18 Sorry 'bout that! On Monday 01 January 2001 21:43, Edwin Erdman wrote:

It's not really an error. I had the same thing with the latest version of VmWare on my install. Just use the defaults, and it will build it quite nicely. I am using the stock SuSE 7 kernel too. VMWare does have a specific build for SuSE but it is an older version in 6.4. It will build nicely Dee. Depending on your install, I use Konquerer to transfer files between the systems.. VMWare will set it all up using a virtual Samba, etc. They really did a nice job on it. . -- Best regards, Gary Today's thought: Chaos, panic, pandemonium - my work here is done.
