[opensuse] USB problems?
I'm running into a bit of an annoying issue with my USB drives. I can plug a drive in, it's found, mountable etc. I can start copying files to the drive, and after a while... say 15 minutes doing a mass copy, the USB drive seem to loose its mount (I don't know how else to describe it), and the copy fails. At this point, the only way to get the drive back is to disconnect/reconnect. I can duplicate this over and over... as long as the data I'm copying is in small bits it all seems to work ok, but if I copy larger amounts, or am copying small bits for a wile, the drive again just drops off. Using 11.1 x86_64 Any ideas? C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This is almost certainly a hardware power issue with your USB port. If you are using a hub, it would need to be a powered hub. If internal, many usb drives have a cable with 2 plugs for extra power. This would be more noticeable with a longer amount of writes, which need more power than idle or reading. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 11.1 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hmmm I was thinking the same... I have a powered hub, and the internal ports cabled to the front of teh case as well as right on the motherboard. I have had the probelm with the powered hub, and the ones on the front of the case.. i haven't tried the USB ports on the motherboard itself. This is a new issue (ie since 11.1) that has popped up... same hardware as with the last 2 releases, and USB hasn't had this issue. Anyway, I'll test the rear USB ports.. see if it still happens. Ahhhh .. I am also seeing this but over a hard wired network connection if i use konqueror and fish from the 11.1 box to the 10.3 box both 64 bit both running 64 bit opensuse it is fine for a while then i just get file does not exist if i kill konq off the reconnect it is ok again .. likewise it happens every time i can find no hint anywhere to say what and why Pete . -- Opensuse 10.3 x86_64 (Linux is like a wigwam no Gates, no Windows, and an Apache inside.) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
