[SuSE Linux] IBM PS/1 printer
Hi, I have an old Ibm ps/1 printer (24 dot matrix) that I have tried to get to work several times without success. Now I see it listed in Word Perfect 8 and was wondering if anyone has managed to get one to work? If I get this to work, I can finally use my Windows CD as a Christmas Tree decoration. A quick grep through the ghostscript sources does not show an entry for a 24-pin ibm printer (only their 9-pin ibmpro and Jetprinter ink-jet printer) -- it is highly likely though that your printer emulates an Epson 24-pin command set and you might be able to configure apsfilter for either "epson" or "epsonc" for color. (I am assuming that Word Perfect 8 uses the printer configuration set up for the rest of your system -- if it has its own program for outputting printer command language (which I doubt, but the fact that it is listed seems to suggest that it might) you would be able to set up apsfilter to just send the output straight through and have WP print correctly, if nothing else.) Do you have a programming manual for the printer, or any documentation on what printer command languages it can emulate? - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

I think you will find WP does use its own printer setup files. I used the printer setup: 'File' > 'Print' > 'Select' > 'Printer Create/Edit' > 'Setup' then choose the your printer from the list of available printers, select 'Destination' click on 'lp' and work back through the 'OK' boxes. It seems to me that WP by-passes the Ghostscript method of printing used by StarOffice as I get hardcopy out of the printer much quicker from WP than SO for the same document. Even in windross WP used its own printing methods rather than use the m$ print manager. Hope this helps (It is great to be back in familiar territory with WP8 it even has reveal codes and it looks as though I could even set it to look like WP5.0 with silver text on a blue background. Unless someone has found a way to use type 1 fonts it looks as though we will need to purchase the 'full' package to get a better selection of fonts. I copied several fonts into the same directory as the WP ones but there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to get WP to use them.) Since writing the above (but before Mailing it :-) ) I found a very useful site which may be of use to anyone trying to set up WP printing/fonts:- <A HREF="http://www.users.fast.net/~rodsmith/wpfonts.html</A">http://www.users.fast.net/~rodsmith/wpfonts.html</A> - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
