Yanpp - Yet another niggling printer problem!

Well I downloaded the epsUtils mentioned in a recent thread, hoping it would cure my problem, but no joy. What is my problem? 1. I have an Epson Stylus Color 740 on lp0, using CUPS under 8.1 (though I had the same problem under 8.0 and lprng) 2. For days on end, the printer will work fine, but then suddenly stops printing, either via lpr or Kprinter or any other way. 3. Symptoms: . the job appears in the queue for an appropriate length of time, then disappears . under kprinter, the printer icon appears in the panel for about the same length of time . no error messages appear in the cups log, in fact, the messages appear to indicate that the job has been successfully printed . nothing happens at the printer 4. What does Yast2 do? It will autodetect the printer and model, but won't print the test page 5. What does epsUtil do? It also recognizes the model, will detect Ink Quantity, and do the Clean Head and Nozzle Check (which actually prints the pattern!), and Reset comes up with no errors, but still the printer won't print afterwards. 6. What have I checked? Well, the correct modules (parport, parport_pc, lp) are all present. I have compared the boot.msg output from 'working' and 'failing' sessions, but can see no difference. I've looked for differences between 'warm boot' (from Windoze) and 'cold boot', but there seems to be none. 7. Where have I looked for advice? Suse manuals/SDB, www.linuxprinting, CUPS sites, Epson site (where I found it uses the ESC/P language; I found the Printer Initialize command and tried echoing it to the printer; no joy). I tried removing and reinstalling the printer under both Yast2, and the KDE control center as mentioned in another thread. Nothing works, except... 8.What do I do? Well, if I power the printer off, then on again after a few seconds, it works! So, not a show stopper, but surely there must be a better way? Needless to say (though it galls me to admit), the printer works flawlessly every time under W*nd*ws. Any ideas? TonyB
