Yast2 crashed 7.3PRO default install wvdial konqueror My skills do not match my needs.
Yast2 crashed (reguired hard reboot) while I was changing my password for my dial up modem. My password stayed as it was before the crash. My system is a default install from the purchased box set of SuSE 7.3 PRO. I have only made the security and reccommended upgrades using "YOU". It is also dual boot with Win98SE with all required "security" updates. I use Lilo boot disc. System has worked (mostly) for months. After the crash Yast2 could not locate my modem USR 5686D External or my HP5 Laserjet printer. Yast was able to locate and start my modem. I am able to log onto my ISP using the root console. I had to reinstall and configure both my modem and printer. Wvdial doesn't work any more. All that happens is a little flash of a window trying to open in the upper left corner of the screen. My cd-rom and cd-rw drives no longer work. They both used to work but only the cd-rom had sound. Html files that I had previously downloaded no longer open unless I change them to htm files. Some web sites that worked with real player and/or java or (flash) do not work anymore. java and java script are enabled in konqueror. Some sites have never opened some java windows. I cannot print from staroffice 5.2 anymore. No printer is listed. Currently I am able to print from most applications and I can use the command console to get to my ISP. I am not an IT or computer tech. I own a small consulting company and run an 8-10 box system with 2 printers etc. Only 1 box needs access to the web so I have been able to function quite well running everything myself for the last 13 years using MS products. I have been trying to switch over to SuSE linux for the last 2 years. Last January I moved all my reports for one of my larger clients to staroffice 5.2. These reports are for the Dept. of Education/Dept. of Labor for the US Gov't. I had no real problems with my system and finally made the switch. Many of these reports required extensive reformatting and macro re-writing. June reports are due by the 15th of July. VERY BAD TIMING. I have read the SuSE manuals, man pages, info pages and web sites. I do not have the skills to fix all these problems without some help. I hope that the things that happened to me during/after the crash are a common symptom and will sound familiar enough for someone to point me to the reference that I need to begin to solve my problems. I have never updated or upgraded anything other than what is done thru "YOU". In the past I simply blew it all away and did a total wipe disc reinstall. Linux was not my production system. I did not rely on it to eat. I now have too much invested in the reports to blow it away. For me, fixing my problems was much easier in Win. Can the owner provide some logs to assist with diagnosis of this problem ? Looking at it, you have posted a million things without any material that people can use to help. Hi Brian Thanks for the nudge aside the head. As I mentioned I am not literate at linux. I do hold out hopes though. While trying to figure out what log files to copy for you I was able to fix the printer problem in SO 5.2 and solve the wvdial konsole missing window problem. These are the same logs I looked at before and missed the clues. So many things instantly went wrong that I had tied myself in a knot. Possibly knowing that you and others were now looking over my shoulder helped me see more clearly. I will keep looking at my cd & real player problems as they are not critical (not revenue generating). I apologize to the list for taking up your time. Thank you Brian for your nudge.
