Best use of Palm Pilot with SuSE-8.1
I have been wanting to use my Palm pilot under Linux. What I want is actually almost the same functionality of Palm Pilot in connection with Outlook Express. I found that Ximian Evolution provides the same functionality with its evolution-pilot package. Beside Evolution, what kind of setup or package would you recommend for the use of Palm Pilot under Linux? Thanks a lot. Regards to all. G. Hugh Song Here is why I can't use Evolution-pilot: Unfortunately, Evolution-1.2.? seems to be required to do the job. SuSE provides Evolution-1.0.?. The trouble is that Evolution-1.2.? needs gtk-2.? version. and that one does not yet work with xim="@Ami" which is the Korean language input method system.

I use JPilot, which does most things. It handles email syncing through a plugin, but I don't know how well that works because I don't use email on my PalmOS device. However, the bits of JPilot that I have used (including the backup and AvantGo plugins) are excellent. The only proviso is that, if you have a USB device, you probably can't use the version of JPilot that SuSE supply. This is because you will probably need pilot-link 0.11.x for USB, for which you will need a later version of JPilot. (I say "probably" because some people have reported that the SuSE versions have worked with their USB devices, but the docs and my experience say that you'll need the later versions! YMMV) HTH John -- John Pettigrew Headstrong Games john@headstrong-games.co.uk Fun : Strategy : Price http://www.headstrong-games.co.uk/ Board games that won't break the bank Valley of the Kings: ransack an ancient Egyptian tomb but beware of mummies!

Interestingly, mine is a Handspring Visor and yet I needed the later versions. This inconsistency is most odd. No you don't, the Visor works well with older version of pilot-link and Jpilot. I have been doing it for years. Thank you for a kind reply. I think I need to add one more crucial requirement of mine. The package should support the Korean language. Does JPilot work with xim='@Ami" input method system of the Korean language Hangul? In fact, most of you out there are English-only users. Here is the weak point of Linux in general. In order for Linux to succeed globally, it should support languages other than European languages. Thanks a lot. G. Hugh Song

I've no idea, I'm afraid - why not install it from the SuSE CD and try it out? Once you know whether this works, you can consider whether you need the later versions. And let us know - in case this comes up again!
