Acrobat reader 7 only allows one file open!?!?!
Hi: I updated my Acrobat reader with YOU (Suse 9.1) the other day, and now I discover that it seems to only allow me to open one PDF at a time. Is there a way to fix it so that it can open multiple PDFs? Thanks. -- Good day! ________________________________________ Christopher R. I think it opens only one window at a time, but keeps all the files loaded in memory. Open several files. Go to the Window menu. You should see all the files listed. Choose the file you want.

Look in the Windows menu. You'll see all the open files listed there and can switch between them by selecting them from that menu. As Ken mentioned, there's only a single document window open (unlike the behavior in Mac OS X and Windows). Note, too, that the back / foward history is still unified across all the documents open (something I personally dislike).

Thanks for the reply. There are some improvements with this ver 7.0 that fix some problems I had before, but I really like to have multiple windows. Sometimes I need to compare tables and other data in documents side-by-side. This new method is likely to force me to have to print stuff more. Oh well... -- Good day! ________________________________________ Christopher R. Try to build a alias/shell function for acroread with option -openInNewWindow. This f.e. opens as much windows as PDF files are found: for f in *.pdf ; do acroread -openInNewWindow $f & done -- Viele Grüße ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Michael

Excellent. Using the "strings" command on the binary (not the cover script that you're executing when you launch /usr/bin/acroread), I've found these options: -file -geometry -tempFileTitle -progressPipe -exitPipe -iconic -tempFile -version -setenv -help -openInNewWindow -display -toPostScript -binary -shrink -expand -scale -landscape -optimizeForSpeed -saveVM -doOPP -printerhalftones -reverse -odd -even -annotsOff -commentsOff -stampsOff -markupsOn -pairs -transQuality -brokenCRD -start -UCS -ADBE -PNGI I don't know what most (if any) of them mean, but one can experiment. Or, of course, one could just invoke it with -help, which as it turns out supplies very extensive option usage information!

Huh. That's interesting. The functionality is there, but Adobe chose to make single UI the default. Odd. Well, now that it's known to be possible from the command line I figured it should be possible to make it work for KDE launched files, too. As follows: (SuSE 10.0) In the KDE Control Center choose "KDE Components", then choose "File Associations" Open the list for "application" and click on "pdf". Click on "Acrobat Reader" on the list of applications. Click on the "Edit..." button. On the Properties dialog click the Application tab. Edit the command to include the -openInNewWindow option. Save and close everything. ODDLY, immediately after doing the procedures above right clicking on a PDF and choosing "Open With" did not list the Acroread program at all. (It did before tweaking the file associations, really, it did.) I had to choose "Other Program" and reassign the adobe program to the PDF. Weird.
