SiS 650 Chipset and SuSE 8.2 in a Laptop ...
Hi out there, I got one big issue with my new Asus Laptop L-3400 DVD: The whole installation of SuSE 8.2 went w/o problems, but now, when booting to runlevel 5, the display goes black and after that only shows some stripes in different colors - no kdm login window as it should be. Booting to runlevel 3 (w/o X) and logging in to console does work. The chipset is a SiS 650, which was already used in Laptops sold preloaded with Linux - so this can't be the great showstopper. What I'ver already tried so far is to enter 'vga=xxx' at the boot prompt, as it is suggested in sdb (this: http://sdb.suse.de/de/sdb/html/wessels_fbdev_grub.html is the page in German, don't know if that: http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/wessels_fbdev_grub.html is the same in English ...) - but this (i.e. using the framebuffer for unsupported video cards) didn't change things either. Yes, and when I try to run SaX from console, or if I enter init 5 in the console, the same thing happens. The moment I would make use of X the display -sort of- crashes. The whole setup so far still is, as it was configured by the 8.2 installation CDs. Any ideas?? Cheers .... Wolfi ============================================= mailto:wolfi_z@gmx.net

Well, this was the X-server setup, but in the meantime I found it out myself ... The trick is to run this: # sax2 -m 0=fbdev (where it is a 'zero' before the 'equal') as root from runlevel 3, this makes the machine use the framebuffer which obviously seems to be necessary, though elsewhere I had read that SiS 650 would no longer require this solution. This line is also mentioned in the sdb article, btw. Cheers ... Wolfi ============================================= mailto:wolfi_z@gmx.net
