Hi Folks,
I have a TIFF problem. It may be a problem that arose during ftp
of the file, but for the moment I'm assuming it isn't.
The original file was saved as a TIFF image by a friend's scanner
software. He then opened it Adobe PhotoShop, adjusted the colours,
and saved it back as a TIFF. (All Win-98 stuff, this).
Then I pulled it over to my SuSE 6.3 system.
None of the image software that I have on Linux will accept this
file -- not 'xv', nor ImageMagick's 'display', nor the GIMP.
The program 'tiffcheck' gives the result
rollo.tif: Warning, unknown field with tag 769 (0x301) ignored.
rollo.tif: Warning, unknown field with tag 769 (0x301) ignored.
rollo.tif: Warning, unknown field with tag 1025 (0x401) ignored.
rollo.tif: Warning, unknown field with tag 1281 (0x501) ignored.
rollo.tif: Warning, unknown field with tag 1281 (0x501) ignored.
rollo.tif: Warning, unknown field with tag 769 (0x301) ignored.
rollo.tif: Warning, unknown field with tag 769 (0x301) ignored.
rollo.tif: Warning, unknown field with tag 390 (0x186) ignored.
rollo.tif: Warning, incorrect count for field "BitsPerSample" (3,
expecting 1); tag ignored.
REJECT
Document is not valid TIFF (unspecified format error)
which is consistent with error messages from other programs.
Now I have had a similar problem before with a TIFF file which
came as a test file with some OCR software. So it may be that
the TIFF file is non-standard or "extended" in a way which the
Linux software won't accept.
So: Does anyone have experience of solving this kind of problem
using Linux?
All suggestions gratefully received.
With thanks,
Ted.

well sweet memories to the pre SAMBA days at work. In my case, the TIFFs looked partly well and sudden broken. Further investigation showed a difference in filesize. Further more, I learned that unix people are both clever and lazy. One system is Unix, the other DOS/Windows. FTP knows this as soon as you login. This switches the transfer mode to "ascii". For that reason Unix LF's are translated to CR/LF on transfer. That explains the different filesizes. It took me a few days to find out, that there is a "binary" transfer mode as well. First thing on ftp, is to type "binary". Hope this is the cure.... Juergen

Well as an afterthought to my other reply: try to transfer a small tiff via disk. btw. we use geo-coded tiffs at work, tiffinfo complains, but overreads and ignores these special tags... Your files might be more wrong than that...
