Re: [SuSE Linux] IRC - Ok, now what? ;)
Ok, after being on the internet for 8 years I finally installed a irc client. (Specifically, Kvirc for KDE) Anyway, I'm looking for a few friendly gathering places for the Linux and or SuSE. (any other suggestions are also welcome!) My first venture to spry's server reminded me of NetMeeting. (ugh!) Be carefull. I had someone telnet into my machine when I was talking to them on IRC. Make sure you have your system secure.

You should have your machine secure if you are connected to the internet at all....not just because you are using IRC. There are other ways to discover your IP than having it discovered on IRC. IRC isn't the culprit...its poor administration. If you have an IP address....you can never keep somebody from finding it. There are enough scanners out there that anybody wanting to find a machine to hack can easily find one. Scanners can scan whole networks for services running on standard ports to find a machine to examine further. Don't run services you don't need (http, ftp, etc). This reduces your chance of being "scanned". Disable root login as was discussed already on this list. I have read about commenting out services such as telnet and ftp in /etc/services. I also know by turning off inetd at boot that people cannot telnet or ftp in whatsoever. Is there more one can do? Notice that turning off inetd does not hamper your ability to get online or use online resources. People have attacked NT boxes with admin passwords set to none also. Other than turning off inetd are there other passageways to a system? -- Michael E.
